Fallen Heir of Acadia
His whole life, Norumbega raised him to be the next Head. He taught Penobscot how to be fair, how to hear all sides, how to heal with his words and his power. When the famine wrought the pack, Penobscot's grief was buried under the weight of responsibility. He was ready for the sign that would put him in charge, to lead the Era of Mountains through another near-decade of glory -
He was ready for the sign that never came.
Instead, it came for Echo, indicating a gangly adolescent with no training. The Wanderers had to be wrong - she was so clueless - so he searched for the right answer. The answer that would show that Echo's lead was a sick joke, a lesson on the pack for some unnoticed crime. He shoved signs under Lichen's nose, and he snarled with rage when eyes he hoped would be filled with realization stared up at him with pity.
Penobscot began to crumble.
He was revered in his pack - he was well trained, after all, and a fantastic actor - but inside, he was cracking. He couldn't understand how the whole pack could accept the signs of Wanderers they couldn't see. Lichen had to have faked the sign - that was it. Lichen didn't want him in power. The rest of the pack must be in on it...
It's damaging to believe that everyone is out to get you.
