Hemlock meant to find the bright thing, sealed in the northern glacier. He meant to speak with it. Seal its shadowlessness in a walnut-shell and bring it somewhere it can't hide. Instead he met Rassel, who spoke casually of an immaculate litter born to the most beloved elder of his pack. She married what she met in the ice, he said. We can't call it anything. It won't tell us its name.

The ice is empty of that god, now.

Isey was very much a wolf puppy, hardly a half-anything at all. Hemlock met him as a boistrous adolescent who dreamed of chasing elk and having a girlfriend, one day. Rassel was old. Isey, though revered, was very young. In this rift of governing power, Hemlock found some purpose as an advisor. He did his very best. There's a disease-ridden colony on the outskirts where the unwanted children linger, now. Isn't that better than chasing them away to their deaths?

It's frustrating to find the thing you're looking for, the fresh wet hoofprints of it, and yet at the end of the trail is nothing at all, as if the elk galloped up into the sky.
