Many hushed whispers were uttered when Stone was born - He wasn't an ugly pup by any means, but his state was incredibly... Average.
Silver Lining looked upon him, and then upon his cousin Fading Embers. With his cousin not only being stronger, but older as well, Silver Lining in his dying days chose to favor her as the next leader, much to Full Moon's dismay.
Despite all of this, Silver Lining only mournfully looked upon the pup when he first opened his eyes.
