Wolfsbane

preleading name: "Aconitum" from wolfsbane (aconitum napellus). pronounced uh-CON-ih-toom

in the ×× year Aconitum would dig up a bundle the late herbalist, Hyacinthoides, had shown her before their passing. Herbs tied together, some familiar and others not. She was instructed to eat it entirely, to ignore the sickening taste and finish them all. Awful to eat, bitter and woody, but the wolfen choked them down.

In minutes she was on the ground. For a full week she lay in the smallest cave in the Bubbling Terrace. Ostuan, the residing herbalist at the time, packed the wolfen in the little opening with soft moss and salt. Here she writhed in pain and transformation. Little movement came of her, but what did was obvious to be in pain by plain sight.

Aconitum's nose split in two, seeping bright blood into spongy vegetation. Muffled yelps from his maw escaped through vivid dreams. What was happening to him? This was a nightmare. His ribs and hips burned in searing pain. Fur exploded out and muscle sizzled and cracked as it formed far too fast. New stark black legs shot out of his trunk in a sickening display of malformation and mutation. The air smelled like forest fires; burning flora and fauna lost to flames. As his body seized one final time stillness encompassed his dark body.

A final day's passing later, young Ostuan came to unseal the cavern. A week and a day of hardened salt and moss peeled back, and purple eyes flicked opened in the darkness, gently glowing.

"Hello, Wolfsbane," the medic offers. "The pack is waiting for your lead."
