Red can only assume he was abandoned due to his eyes. He knows what he looks like and how others stare at him. So much so he closes his eyes and walks around with them shut.
When he was adopted, it took a bit of prying from his mothers' to get him to open his eyes. Red was ready to be left again when he did, ready to be rejected. But the opposite happened. He was embraced. Loved.
After his hunters exam, he was given a great honor- furture Lead Chaser to the Rising Stars hunting party. Some of his peers... look down at the judgment call, preferring the Alphas' daughter Storm to take up the role but Frosts' word is final. And its not like everyone agrees with that sentiment.
