Baelfire

Baelfire. The name that had been whispered in the ears of old Palenose by wind, the name that caused dark clouds to roll across the ancient pupsitter's vision ... he had been wrong. So wrong. He had been watching Hollowheart, he had been so sure that that cruel wolf would be the one to whelp the demon that would upset the entirety of the pack. Especially when that stranger with the piercing eyes appeared ...

But no. Baelfire was not whelped by that pair of dark souled misfits. His mother was a dishonest wolf, yes, and perhaps when the wind had whispered to him he had heard the first part of the name wrong. Not a spawn of a Hollowheart, but of a Brokenheart. But Brandedsight? The loyal scout they had raised from a pup? The smiling, adventurous male with the markings across his eyes like a white blaze of wings? This was the father of the dark storm that would uproot everything the pack had known?

As the newborn grew, Palenose felt that the life was being sapped from his old limbs. Each breath the pup took seemed to steal one of his own, and he realized that his time was swiftly approaching. And when Brokenheart, of her own accord, named the pup upon weaning with the name that had been haunting his dreams, he knew it was certain.

When Baelfire became an adult, he came to the Nursery to aid with the newborns and pack adoptees. He had watched with keen eyes as Snowmoon, fearing Palenose's prophecy and upon urging from the aged wolf that darkness was coming and the pups would be better off outside of the pack chased every pup off as they became old enough. Nearly every pup that reached adulthood after Baelfire was born was sent away from the pack upon reaching an age that they could care for themselves, and the keen-eyed male watched, and took in this exodus. He watched as Palenose grew weaker and weaker, and just two months after he had earned his adult fur, Palenose left to join the spirits on the Moonpath.

Baelfire continued to watch as pup after pup was exiled from the pack after they became self-sufficient, but began noticing something strange. More and more pups were being allowed to stay once more. Entire litters that arrived from other packs were given names, and sent to be apprenticed. What was Snowmoon thinking? Was she weakening? And so, Baelfire set his eyes upon leadership. He kept caring for the pups, but began gathering his strength, preparing for the day that Snowmoon left the pack. He knew she was preparing her young daughter, Frostmoon, to take up the mantle of leadership. Frostmoon was still a pup, and so if he began training now, he would have even that much more of an advantage when he decided to fight her for rule of the pack.
