In a pack full of stoic and aggressive personalities, oftentimes there can be disagreements, but the one unifying opinion that seems to stand the stretch of time is: Shep should've been kicked out a long time ago. A former friend of Athelstan's, a rift formed between the two once the leader realised that Shep was feeding him lies about the other pack members, and whilst Athelstan was sick he made the illness out to be much worse than it actually was and even tried alluding to being the next heir. As the web of lies became more tangled and more outlandish, Shep was confronted and given a stern warning.
Many still believe that behind the scenes he's still trying to secure his place as next-in-line, whether this be through neglectful healing practices on potential heirs or simply just trying to cause rifts between pack members, but they're rumours not looked into by Athelstan, perhaps due to some attatchment to his forlorn former friend. Most wolves nowadays know not to take his words too seriously and just smile and nod as he's working on their ailments, for despite the danger he could've put the others in, he is a very competent healer. Besides, with Snowdrop constantly breathing down his neck, he couldn't throw a coup even he tried.
