Biography
She remembers a time when the sun shone just as bright but did not cast light in her life the way it does today. When she first arrived at the Greyhide Sanctum, lonely and with no idea of who she was. It seemed, back then, when she was just shy of her coming-of-age, that she would never fit in; the dynamics were already set, families established, friends made.
She was by herself. The worst part was that when she looked at her reflection in the water, she did not like who she saw. She did not recognise her own reflection. She remembers talking to Zash about it once... he reassured her that one day, she'd find a nice female to settle down with that will have her pups. She couldn't think of anything she wanted less -- she didn't want to mate with a female, she didn't want that role.
She wished they would all stop saying "he", and "him".
"Why wish?" asked Zash one day, wide-eyed and looking like he was about to drop a bombshell. "You were born into a body you don't like, so change! I will call you a female if you say that that is what you are."
So, Hickory changed. She had the others stop referring to the identity she didn't connect to, and with Zash's ever-steady support, she learned to embrace herself. There was nobody that saw her as clearly as Zash did, truly, and she felt so special when he looked at her like she'd hung the stars in the sky. When she fell in love, it was no surprise -- when he fell in love too, it left her shocked.
And one day, under the night sky with Zash at her side, she would lament that they could never have puppies of their own. Zash reassured her that they could take in pups that needed a family, and while she loved that, she knew it wasn't the same. And it was that night, at her soulmate's side, that the moon blessed her.
Its light bathed Hickory in pale blues, and she felt its song in her soul. The moon had granted her final wish -- it had granted her the ability to have pups of her own.
Now, Hickory cannot believe how lucky she is. The sanctum is her home, Zash is her mate forever and always, and the puppies that trip the hunters up when they return exhausted from a hunt bear a resemblance to her that she had never known was possible.
