"Do you have to leave?" Kihja whines, tears filling her eyes.
Ejeiko softens and nuzzles her without restraint, body heat a welcome feeling against the cold night air. "You know I do, Ki," he whispers, always so careful and kind. "I don't belong here. I love the pack, and I love you, but Greyhide isn't my home. Not anymore."
Kihja dips her head to hide her tears as they dampen the fur on her cheeks. "I love you too. More than you could ever know." She steps into his space and forces her head under his, cuddling as close to him as possible. This is the last time she'll get to feel his warmth. "I wish you'd let me come with you."
"You're still nursing the puppies," Ejeiko points out quietly, pulling her impossibly closer. "And the journey that awaits me is dangerous. I wouldn't drag you into that on my life."
Kihja bites her tongue to avoid reminding him that she is perfectly capable of looking after herself, and she'd follow him anywhere as long as he stayed by her side. Instead, she buries her nose in the silky snow of Ejeiko's chest fur, letting his scent fill her nose, the sound of his breath in her ears.
A quiet sniffle, like Ejeiko is trying not to give himself away. "Your home is here. I need to find mine again. I need to find myself again," He suddenly pulls away, and Kihja whimpers, crying in earnest now, missing him already even though his eyes, so full of love, meet hers. He touches their noses together. "I'll achieve what I set out to achieve and when I do, I'll come back and visit. I'll see you again, I promise."
"Swear it," Kihja almost snarls, ears pinned to her head. "Swear I'll see you again."
Ejeiko only hesitates for a moment. "I swear on the stars." It's an empty promise, they both know. No wolf can control his fate. So he amends his lie with the truth; "I swear on the stars that I'll do everything I can to see you again."
Kihja nearly sobs, but she holds it in. She charges forward one more time to feel Ejeiko's body against hers, and then she stumbles away, afraid that the next time he comes near, she'll never be able to let go again. "Get out of here, Jei," she orders weakly. "Go find yourself again. Go and find your happiness. I'll wait here, for as long as I need to."
Ejeiko nods. He turns around and heads towards the darkness, throwing one meager glance of sorrow in her direction before he disappears.
Kihja turns around and paws at her face, wiping the tears away frantically. She has pups waiting for her in the nursery -- pups that bear Ejeiko's eyes and the ashen grey of his fur. They need her... Right now, they need her. Maybe not always; maybe when they grow older they'll take after their father and give in to their free-spiritedness, but for now...
Kihja isn't going to let Ejeiko distract her from her duties as a mother. Her heart aches, her soul feels empty, but she will be alright. She'll see him again, one day.
