Abyss

Abyss is a Melanistic adolescent with vibrant orange eyes. They are in training with adults in the hunting parties to be a chaser of prey. Their selfish personality means they often put themselves before others and frequently demand the best hunk of prey, despite their elders being present.

Abyss is the youngest of the hunting wolves, at only a year and a half old. His dark pelt makes it easy for him to blend in, then dart out to give chase. Although his selfish personality makes him a little rough around the edges, he and his hunting group have come to respect one another, and he follows instructions better now than when he was a trainee. He thinks the new arrival Peregrine is pretty cute, but isn't sure how to address such.

Abyss is settling into his role as a Chaser fairly well. It helps that he respects both Cypress and Maple now...and that he and Everest get along decently. It also helps that he is easing his way into being a more well-rounded pack member in general. Granted, he's still selfish enough that he grabs the best piece of prey from the stash immediately...but now he brings it to Peregrine. The pupsitter doesn't seem to understand the significance of this gesture, but is grateful all the same, and Abyss feels...oddly good to be providing for the other male.

Abyss continues to serve as a reliable chaser on Cypress' hunting team, though the talk of Cypress and Maple stepping down as they age has him bristling. It takes a lot to earn his respect, and with Phantom not around to do so, he defers to Cypress and Maple more as his leaders. The thought of some younger wolf leading the hunt has his teeth gnashing, though they do their best to soothe him. He and Everest often go running together to burn off some of his frustration, so that he can come back and watch over the pack. Well, over Peregrine at least.

Abyss recently dealt with the rumors of changes to his hunting party coming true. Maple, pregnant with what will likely be her last litter, chose to step down and become a mentor to the young puppies in the pack. Her own beloved friend, her soulmate, Cypress, stepped down alongside her. Their parts in the hunt were filled by newer wolves, and Abyss has struggled greatly with it. It is only Everest's constant, confident, calming presence that keeps him from snapping at the way these new folks don't do things the same way as they had been done in the past. He has even snapped at Peregrine lately, so distraught is he by the change.

With all the changes in the pack, the new faces coming and going, Abyss has been struggling to adjust. Even with Everest's steady assistance, he has gone back to pushing most others away, including Peregrine. Though he will train adolescents, it is done with gritted teeth and glowering gaze, and at the end of the day he seeks out solitude rather than the pupsitter he refuses to acknowledge his feelings for.
