The thorny shrub with bright red berries known as the firethorn gets its name from the Greek words pyr, which means "fire" and akanthos, meaning "thorn". It is not poisonous, but the plant is capable of defending itself with its many barbs, which can cause nasty stings. Likewise, Pyra herself can handle most things on her own, though she isn't afraid to ask for help or to help others when they need it. Her reliability and faith in her packmates make her a beloved member of the pack and has earned her the status of alphess.
