Biography
You're making your way over a rocky slope when a wolf bursts from the trees further down, in hot pursuit of a rabbit. She's doing a surprisingly excellent job of keeping up with it's swift movements, turning at the bat of an eye to change directions, slowly yet surely creeping closer and closer to it. Just a few breaths more and it would be between her jaws, when the rabbit at last discovers a burrow nestled between some stones to throw itself safely inside. The wolf jumps over the pile and lets out a frustrated bark, slowing to a jog. She looks up and notices you, perking up and trotting over, tail wagging.
"Well, hello there! Sorry there wasn't a triumphant end to my thrilling chase, I could've sworn I had it that time." She said, pouting in exaggerated annoyance. She smiles after her point was made, and gives an easy chuckle.
"I'm Anatango, one of the hunters for Clockwork. The Cogs hunting party is much more capable as a group, I assure you. Though if you liked my chasing here, then wow, if you could see all of us in action. It's all, ducks and leaps and unspoken coordination. I never imagined I would get to be a part of something like that when I headed out on my own." She said dreamily, her mind, and gaze, drifting elsewhere before she shook her head and snapped her eyes back to you.
"I don't know if you've met any of the others, but they all seem to have some pretty cool stories, huh? I hate to disappoint but my mine's not nearly as exciting. I mean, that's why I'm here in the first place, really." She said with a sigh.
"Sure, it was just me, my parents, my sister and little brother, but we were just a simple, comfortable family, living a simple, comfortable life, with simple comfortable problems. Which is to say not a lot. The rabbits were fat and slow and the weather was warm. The territory couldn't really support any larger wolf packs so we didn't have to worry about any moving in, and any strays that came through usually kept to themselves, same as us." Anatango said, giving a shrug.
"Like, I know I shouldn't complain, hearing what some others are coming from. Sickness, famine, fighting, you know. Death, and all that. But living a simple life it just, felt like it was slowly eating me away from the inside, you know?" Anatango said, looking at you earnestly.
"I needed something more than just existing, day in and day out. There was never anything new. And so, one day I decided to let my family know that. And that was that. I miss them, yeah, but well, I would miss them then, well . . . You know what? Follow me!" She jumps up, taking a few excited steps before glancing back with a mischievous wink. "That is, if you can keep up."
She takes off before you can get your feet underneath you, bounding off over the stones and roots. From watching her display earlier, you can tell she's not giving this her all, which only drives you go faster. She gives a surprised laugh when you catch up and run alongside her. She nods approvingly, guiding you between the trees and over brooks. She eventually slows down, laughing lightly as she catches her breath.
"Nicely done! I almost had to really try." She pants out, giving you a sly look. After giving you both a minute to catch your breath, she gestures you further on. "Okay, so while that was fun, it wasn't what I wanted to show you. It's just a little further on."
You follow her through the trees, silhouetted by rays of sunlight. You squint and blink as you make your way towards it, stepping past the trees.
"This is what I wanted you to see." Once your eyes adjust, you find yourself on a rocky outcropping, overlooking a valley between the hills. The sun is peeking just barely over their tops, washing the world in golden light, the clouds soft blues and greys. You can make out a small, winding river through the trees, leading towards a lake where the ripples of water sparkle in the evening light. A few birds swoop in and out of the treetops, making final preparations for before nightfall.
"Sometimes I worry about the family I left behind. I wonder what they're up to. If anything has happened to them. But then I see things like this, and these moments they. . . they remind me why I left." She falls silent for a moment, her face an expression of serene peace that matched the scenery.
"It's not about what I was leaving behind, when I left. It's always about what I'm heading towards. . . you know?" She turns to look back at you, and gives you a genuine, warm smile. She looked back out over the hills as the sun continued to set, before finally slipping out of view.
"Anyways, I should be heading back. It was nice meeting you, and sharing this moment. Maybe you'll run into some of the other pack members, if you see someone in Cogs make sure to let them know you were no match for my speed." She jokes, sticking her tongue out at you teasingly before once again turning and running off into the trees.
