After striking out on his own, Syens came across the Windtooth Hunters on a scent trail in the coniferous forest. While interested in how cohesively the team moved while hunting, what really caught his eye was the beautiful Ourea. After offering to help, he was a trained chaser after all, he did his best to bond with Ourea on their journey home. When meeting Nynaeve, he only had eyes for Ourea, and Nynaeve's knowing smile was enough to make him a little sheepish at his inability to repeat back anything she'd said. She told him he could join, even attempt to woo Ourea if Ourea was accepting, but he would need to pull his weight in the hunting party to help keep the pack fed in return. After not having been interested in any other female, he certainly wasn't going to pass up the ability to see if Ourea was his mate. Bring on the hunts, he has a female to win!
