It's late at night. The quarter moon shines dully through the cover of the leaves, their shadows lapping at the mouth of the cave. Fang and his siblings are wriggling around Swan's swollen belly, searching for milk. Their mother, exhausted, huffs with fatigue while Fang uses his siblings' heads as footholds, shoving their snouts off of each teat they latch onto, convinced that if another puppy has access to food, it's better than what he currently has.
Finch lays on his belly not far away, watching with hooded eyes.
