THE COLD of Year 2:
The frost was lifting; the greenery has only just started to return; and so help me, the once slow critters were becoming faster, more agile. Harder to be captured, no thanks to the sugars in the refreshed land.
Though I mustn't show weakness - not before Gloom. Had my mother not have refused her, I too wouldn't have left the warmth of her den, the safety of my fathers' protection. If anything, her small size should've granted her more protection, the warmest of sitters? Maybe one day, I will understand.
But, I will not forgive. I mustn't give up. For Gloom. I'd searched and chased all week, from Dusk till Dawn. No luck. My hunts unsuccessful, I realise it was my body failing me, not my motivation.
Gloom nestles closer into me again, as we try to share warmth through our final nights. What chance at life was this? Were we ever to appreciate a summer day? A game of playful chase?
I startle at something pushing it's way through our hideaway. An ocelet? A coyote? I growl to frighten them off, but realise I could barely stand to fight. Gloom couldn't have run far. What do we do?!
I see a large, warm brown body trying to peek through our dense coverage. I smell blood. He's already eaten, we're going to be just a snack! I'm sorry Gloom; I've failed you!
The brown body sniffs the entrace of our hideaway, and I hear something drop. I smell..? Food?!
"I can provide for the two of you back in our lands, but it's not safe here." I can see the figure of this mammal peering around cautiously. "My name is Bear. It's time we go now…"
