Champion never knew his rogue parents. He doesn't remember any of this, but when he was but half a month old, his father was shot and killed by a hunter whilst guarding the family den. His mother subsequently died the following winter of starvation and heartbreak. The pup remained curled up inside his mother's posthumous embrace, shielded from the cold. This is where Ludao found him a week after his mother died. The pup was skin and bones, smelled of rot and death, but he was alive. Death had tried its very hardest to claim the pup— but the pup was strong and had defeated it. Thus, Ludao donned him "Champion". Ludao, who had just broken off of River Has No End pack, took Champion under his wing and quickly brought the pup back to his original pack where he had an friend named Rattlesnake nurse Champion back to health. However, Rattlesnake's mate Puppy hated Ludao and saw him as a rival male who intended to steal Rattlesnake for himself. So when Champion was weaned, Ludao bid adieu to Rattlesnake and Champion and set off as a rogue. However, Champion decided to sneak away from his adoptive mother and rejoin Ludao on his journey. Ludao was angered that Champion risked his life to regroup with him, but amazed at Champion's hardiness and tracking skills. Ludao had been a top notch scout in River Has No End, and he could sense great scout potential in Champion. So Ludao began to train Champion. Champion learned how to hunt without being detected, how to find his way back and never get lost, how to claim territory for his own and find good places to live. Soon Champion became one of the top scouts in the area alongside Ludao. They lived by themselves for about two years until Kingpin caught them stealing food from his territory. Kingpin, who was in need of better scouts (Beetle was more of an advisor than a scout!) asked the two to join him and seek out more territory for the pack, and that is where they reside today.
