♫ : Metaphors - The Crane Wives
🕊
The abysmally grey skies stretched forever, melting to the earth and obscuring the land in front of Nefelibata. Not that they minded too much, though- it didn't even know where it was going in the first place! Nor how long they had been wandering. But, given from the burning in their throat, and the weariness within their legs, it assumes their days of traveling have been endless. Any longer, it may just forget it's own name...
And yet, a sliver of hope beckoned on the horizon. A clear lake broke into the wolf's view, the fog itself clearing away as if to beckon them forward and pull them in. With withering strength, Nefelibata managed to reach the edge of the pool, and without a second thought, it dove right in. The frigid shock was soon replaced with a feeling of vigor. The northern waters were colder than they were used to- and cleaner, too. Yet, as the pale, icy waters washed away the months of caked mud and dirt, they found themselves unable to remember just where it is that they came from. Surely Nefelibata must have come from somewhere, as all wolves do, right?
They did not get to ruminate on this for too long before a startled bark sounded behind them.
"O-Oh! I... wasn't expecting anyone to be here." The voice was gentle and even, floating above the mist like a songbird in a storm. And it was the first voice Nefelibata had heard in who-knows-how-long. A young tawny wolf stood just a measure away from the edge of the shore, his posture friendly, yet hesitant to approach much further. Nefelibata began to make their way out of the water, and the other wolf took a step back.
"I'm, ah, sorry for interrupting you. I was out checking the hunting grounds." He dipped his head and offered them a small tail wag. "...Are you looking for the Sanctuary?"
Sanctuary? It glanced quizzically at the other as it breached the lake. Nefelibata gave their coat a great shake, unwittingly pelting the other wolf in the face. Sanctuary, sanctuary... The slightest hint of familiarity flickered in their chest- was this where they were going?
The wolf took a moment to paw the droplets from their muzzle. "The Sanctuary- it's my pack. We offer a home for wandering wolves... Or, um, just food and a safe place to sleep, if you need." His eyes dropped to Nefelibata's ribs, bones protruding from it's skin, before shooting back up to meet their intense gaze. "I'm Lilt, by the way! May I know your name?"
They couldn't remember the last time it had spoken out loud, and didn't trust themselves to remember right away. Instead, they mumbled, "Lih-ihlt... Lilt..." Slowly repeating the other wolf's name and testing how it's voice sounded. Had it always been so raspy and untrained? Lilt seemed patient, if confused, as they mumbled to themselves a moment.
At last, they raised their volume, "Lilt... I am... Nefelibata... I am going... to... Sanctuary."
Lilt beamed. "It's really nice to meet you, Nefelibata. Come with me, I can lead you to a den, and you can get some rest, okay?"
Nefelibata never was a wary wolf to begin with, but something about their new companion seemed so genuine and heartfelt, they felt compelled to follow along. Lilt stayed close beside them, chattering merrily about the Sanctuary and many others whom they did not know. Nefelibata was too weary to add much in terms of it's own commentary, but as the pair walked, they found themselves comforted in the warmth and pleasantness of Lilt's voice. Perhaps, it mused silently, this comfort was the only thing it was looking for after all.
Before even reaching the edge of the Sanctuary's inner territory, Nefelibata had made up their mind; If the Sanctuary is where they could find kind souls such as Lilt, then that is exactly where they need to be.
