Sparrowhawk is the adopted son of Cypress--his biological father is a mixed-breed street dog who wooed Nari after a successful heist they did together. When it became clear that Nari had become pregnant from their encounter, the mysterious cur disappeared. Nari found her way back to the pack and safely gave birth to the lone puppy. Cypress, amused by the scrappy little striped pup and taking pity on the poor, fatherless thing, took him in and promised his long-time friend that he would care for Sparrowhawk as his own. Nari thanked him and took a break from her wandering for a time to serve as a temporary hunter while Sparrowhawk grew.

Cypress was shocked when the pup's eyes opened and found himself staring into deep pools of olive, the same shade as his own. He took this as a sign from the First Ones that his decision to adopt the boy was right, and their bond would be as close as father and first-born son, but he often pondered at night the identity of the pup's true father.
