Autumn’s winds blew gently upon the pack of Barren Shade, bringing forth new trials for its members and, above all, its daring leader. 

This time, such incidences came upon the form of two she-wolves, sisters, nestled in the depths of cavernous mines long forgotten by their early holders, right by the desert’s edge. Both females were worn when Dawn’s Light found them, beat and thinned by an ordeal of which neither seemed capable of naming, much less speaking of.

Yet more beckoning than their frail health were the bundles of fur guarded between the grown wolves’ chests. Three newborn pups yipped between their mothers’ paws, pelts devoid of all colour but that of darkness, one such as the wanderer had never come across before.

Much like the deepest shadows cast by a new moon, the puppies seemed to absorb all light and life around them, reflecting not one of their mother’s markings and granting Dawn’s Light with one very humbling certainty; these were the imprints of Death, and to shun or disgrace them would surely be to anger providence itself.

Thus, after a few gentle words and promises of a safe haven, the two sisters agreed to follow their newfound leader back to what he claimed to be their burrow, each holding a shadow in their mouths.

Two twins and one lonesome pup, all touched by death’s gentle paw. Though two of the three would later come to walk different paths to that of the pack, one would remain, joining its ranks underneath a new name, much like that of her mother and her sister in turn.

Mourner’s Spectre, Gloom’s Dam, and Bearer of Shadows joined the pack of Barren Shade.
