"hm-hm-mhhhm~" the soft humming resonate in the forest, the last remaining of the winter were still visible on the leaves and the trees; white ears perked up, listening to the sound of some brave mice down in the undergrowth "eheh~ you are lucky, little ones~ I'm not here for you~" the white haired wolf giggled, turning to continue his search of some fresh herbs and new born buds, the absent humming back in his throat.
The day was at his peak when the search was complited, fresh clovers in his mouth, the male started to go back at the little cave he had found in his travels. His ears moved slightly when the forest grow quiet, no chirping, no movement, then, the rustling in the foliage put him on alert.
An elk cow with her youngling? no, he was to far away from the herds.
A bear? probably, given the chaos of the movements.
Surely, he didn't see the possibility of a young she-wolf, brown fur covered in blood and scars, coming, but here he was, looking at said female with curious eyes, reciprocated with a suspicius and not so well hidden fear one.
"hey there~" he said, reciving a growl in response " oh don't fear me, love~ I'm not a foe~" he assured "some nasty wounds you have there, do you need any help?"
she didn't answered right away, looking at him.
"I...I need some place to catch my breath..." she said at last, unsure.
"hm~ then come~ I have some extra food you might like~"
" I don't have anything to give in return..."
"I see...then, as a payment, you can tell me what makes a wolf smell like humans and their blood~"
If anyone ever told him he would find his companion in a way like that, he would have laugh. Him? a partner? nah.
But looking at the sleeping, furry body next to him, snuggled in his fur like a puppy, he thanked the stars for that encounter. He liked the raspy fur of her head one last time, before sinking his nose in the crook of her neck, the soft humming of back then inviting a peaceful sleep to both of them.
