These woods are even stranger than the last ones they were in. Gwyn has been trying to stay brave as they wander the unfamiliar lands, but Bajira is trembling at her side, and her frayed nerves are really starting to wear off on Gwyn.
But no, she can't falter. Bajira is younger, and that makes her Gwyn's responsibility. So she forges on, nosing Bajira's ears intermittently to comfort her, straining for the slightest sign of danger.
Suddenly, a bush rustles behind them. Gwyn freezes up and Bajira darts under her, whimpering. "Somebody's tailing us!" she squeaks, shaking wildly.
Gwyn leans low over Bajira, facing the rustling bush with as vicious a snarl as she can muster. Why did their pack kick them out? There hadn't been enough food to go around, she knew that logically, but why her and Bajira? They'd been the youngest wolves there, and when push came to shove, they'd apparently been the most expendable.
Without a lick of stealth, out from the bush emerges an amber wolf, twice Gwyn's size and half her hostility. "It's alright!" insists the amber wolf, her ears pinning down. "I won't hurt you, little ones. It's okay."
Her voice is warm and sounds safe, but Gwyn is sceptical. Why should she trust this stranger?
"My name is Hickory," the amber wolf says, smiling. "Why are you two out here all alone? You're awfully young." She's edging closer, and Gwyn curls in on Bajira protectively. Hickory picks up the miniscule movement immediately and her steps halt abruptly; she knows the boundary.
"Our old pack kicked us out because they were going hungry," Bajira whines.
Hickory's face falls. "Oh, darlings, that is truly awful. You look far too skinny for your size, too... Why don't you come back to my pack with me? We have plentiful food there, and everyone is so very nice," With every word she seems to be crouching lower to the floor, making herself look smaller. If it's meant to make Gwyn and Bajira trust her, it's working. "You'd be safe there."
Gwyn narrows her eyes, but Hickory's friendly demeanour doesn't break. She looks down at Bajira and is met with hopeful golden eyes, wide and tired. She sighs and shakes her head. "My name is Gwyn, and this is Bajira," she mumbles, looking back up at Hickory. "Please, we're lost and we're so, so tired."
Hickory straightens with a sorrowful look in her eye. She pads forward and touches Bajira's nose with her own, coaxing her out from beneath Gwyn. "It's nice to meet you both. Come on, let's go home."
