[CW: Animal Death. Not super graphic but I do describe how it dies]
When Fire decided to begin traveling on her own as an adolescent, her mother Vixen highly disapproved. It took some conversations with Leader Safiya for her to finally, reluctantly, agree. However, Vixen insisted that Fire be safely escorted to the territory of whomever she visited until adulthood. Safiya promised to personally locate and bring Fire to a willing pack to host her.
While exploring in the desert, Safiya meets a young male wolf whom introduces himself as Drevois, leader of Fäldraan. After some friendly chatting, Drevois agrees to host Fire.
The next day, Fire begins the long trek to Fäldraan base in the taiga, her mother bidding her a tearful goodbye.
Though they arrive in the late afternoon, Drevois explains daily training is mandatory for all young wolves in the pack, and if she's not too tired she can accompany a hunting party out. Fire responds enthusiastically, excited at the chance to go on a real hunt. She's directed to Suurnak, leader of the First Ones hunting party, who seems appreciative of her willingness, and assigns her the role of chaser. Sylos, the youngest chaser, snarkily remarks that he hopes Fire can keep up after her journey over, because the tundra is neither close by nor a forgiving place to hunt. The eldest, Srrowvask, snaps at him to pipe down, but turns to Fire and kindly tells her that if she wants to she can wait for the next hunt, which occurs in their territory instead. Fire confidently insists she has enough energy. Srrowvask accepts it and gives Fire the rundown of a chaser's role. After a howling rally to summon the last couple members, they depart.
It's clear Suurnak is an experienced stalker, quickly tracking down a small trail for them and rarely losing the scent. But to everyone's surprise it's actually Fire that spots the prey first! A lone muskox calf lost from its herd. Excited, she barrels ahead to start the chase. Srrowvask growls, picking up a spring to catch up, the other chasers close behind. She clips Fire on the shoulder as a scolding, and continues ahead.
The calf is fast, but it doesn't have much endurance. As long as everyone can keep their footing, this should be easy- ah. Fire, still second in the chaser's race, trips over a ditch and wipes out. Sylos, who was foolishly riding her tail in a fit of passive aggression after her earlier insubordination, goes down like a domino seconds later. The other chaser, Velorkas, is forced to spend precious time dodging them. With only two chasers in the running, their strategy is compromised and the finisher Irravos is unable to get her jaws on the calf. It disappears into a nearby herd of reindeer.
The three retreat to find Suurnak attempting to prevent a fight between Fire and Sylos, who have untangled themselves and are snarling at each other. He's forced himself between them and they're yelling at each other over his back. Sylos has his chest pressed right up against Suurnak's flank and his head and neck are thrown over Suurnak as he tries to intimidate the smaller wolf, much like a Karen leaning over the counter to scream at a teen.
Srrowvask graps him by the scruff and drags him off to chew him out whilst Irravos and Velorkas move to comfort Fire, who is clearly putting up a front to hide her mortification. Together with Suurnak they reassure her and cheer her up with hilarious hunting fail stories from their younger days. This is not the worst they've had a hunt ruined, not by a long shot, Suurnak tells her. Irravos agrees. Sylos is just an overzealous yearling who overreacted. They all politely ignore Srrowvask's yelling in the distance.
After a bit, Srrowvask returns with Sylos in tow, who looks sufficiently cowed. She and Suurnak nod, and they begin the walk home.
As they cross the treeline and return to the taiga, Suurnak stops, sniffing the air. He looks conspiratorially at Fire and signals the others to keep moving. Fire approaches him, curious. Suurnak quietly explains he's caught scent of a rabbit, and would she like a one on one hunting lesson? Fire enthusiastically nods, tail wagging and a toothy grin splitting across her muzzle.
Together they track the rabbit a short distance. Suurnak pauses them and there to give tips. Fire hangs on to every word. Once the rabbit is in sight, Suurnak explains what she should do, and recommends a strategy, but this next bit he wants her to do herself. Following his instruction, Fire crouches low and approaches from downwind. When the rabbit begins to show suspicion, she bursts into a sprint. The rabbit goes to escape but she's right on its heels. She snaps once, twice, then in frustration attempts to swipe its hind legs. It works and the rabbit stumbles, but Fire nearly trips over and and can't get a good grip on it, missing the neck and instead nicking its upper back. Mildly injured and panicking, the rabbit scrambles away, kicking up pine needles into Fire's face. She sneezes but continues after it. Her experience playing in her home of the deciduous forest serves her well, she weaves through the trees at top speed and eventually beats the rabbit around a bend. She runs into it again, this time prepared with her head low and bowls it over like a charging buck. While the rabbit is still flailing she snatches it up by the neck and shakes hard, breaking its neck. She sets it down, panting.
Suurnak's heavy footsteps soon follow. He smiles, delighted by her success, and tells her it was a great save. Pleased as punch, Fire thanks him, though not immodestly. Together they swiftly return to catch up with rest. The others congratulate her on her first catch, though Sylos does so rather sheepishly. As they near the base, Suurnak tells Fire she'll be presenting the carcass to Drevois, since she caught it.
When the reach the home base, Fire approaches Drevois at Srrowvask & Suurnak's urging, proudly laying the rabbit at his paws. He smiles, tail gently wagging, and tells her she can keep it. He's busy right now, but he'll want to hear the story behind this over dinner tonight, if she doesn't mind. She accepts. Dinner can't come soon enough! No it's not the bragging rights... she starving! It's been a long day.
