Pius is considered the first official bishop of Rome and was a central figure in one of early Christianity's bitter disputes. During this conflict, Rome welcomed St. Justin into its folds, who remained in the city from 140 to 165 when he was martyred.
From the ninth century on, Pius was accepted as having also been martyred.
