Digger fulfilled every role for her pack, except the mantle of healer. She paused only to perceive relations developing among the pack.  Most of her time was dedicated to pupsitting so it was no surprise Digger chose to have descendants.

As was custom among Snow Hearts, Digger kept only one of her three offspring. They were all fine examples of Digger's strength, but once chosen, the pup had to be perfection. The small, golden she-wolf was changed by the patchy-furred apes in a sneaky manner.  Digger knew the price would be immeasurable if she wanted to see her favored daughter grow to display exceptional beauty, strength, and wisdom. Her daughter had to become someone worthy to carry on Digger's legacy. She crept away from the structure and the land of the strange, noisy creatures without incident.

Digger underestimated the cost of such a transformation upon her tiny bundle when, at first, she could detect no malignant change within her nor in little Tunnel.  Digger recalled Tunnel was plopped between an ape's fore-paws, small unassuming tyke she was then, and altered seemingly by magic. Nothing more initially occurred as far as Digger could discern.  Tunnel was stunning, Digger was unharmed, and none of the no-fur apes had appeared to follow them later. She kept telling herself so even after Digger existed past her dearest friend, Fury.

Digger tried not to notice her lack of appetite. Indeed, it was grand! She need not pause to consume, leaving more for her pack-mates. She did not grow bored nor tire. However, she was unable to do anything meaningful.

Digger attributed her inability to affect change at first to her old bones. This was not quite the case. True, she was very much the same, but it was quickly becoming obvious. Her price: to be unable to assist the Snow Hearts. She could not even leave the forest.

Whenever the pack fled the conifers, always chasing the elk, Digger remained. She watched them disappear to the north, once to the south and smelling of boar and equine upon return. Yet for the most part, Snow Hearts traveled north and Digger sat. Until one day, her daughter did not return.

By this point, Digger gained a companion in Sprinkles, daughter of her trusted friend. Digger was able to lean on Sprinkles this once. The independent daughter usually wandered after her own incorrigible continuous existence. This grief passed in much haze, Digger missing much of her grandchild's life.

Burrow did not even know Digger was still with them. She did not share her grandmother's unswerving loyalty to the Snow Hearts either, as Consideration had spoiled such trust. Even the promise of change, no more sacrifices, and genuine transparency could not convince Burrow to stay.

So here Digger rests among the pine trees, doomed to observe the seasonal passage of wolves once her very kin. No longer does she wish for legacy, beauty, strength... only for them to endure. At least she is not alone.
