Her silver pelt twinkled in the low drafts of moonlight ā she huffed in exhaustion. Weakened, she finally let herself sink, whining and shaking. Little droplets of blood fell from her chipped ears.
A golden wolf crept up beside her, ears lowered and tail tucked between her legs. Scores of another wolf's claws marked her mug and flank, still fresh and scarlet. "You didn't need to do that for me, Sitri."
"You'd have rather me let you be killed?"
The golden wolf dips her head as if embarrassed. "Perhaps Iā"
Sitri shook her head, before the golden wolf could make any excuses. She flicked her tongue against one of the cuts on her snout, making her twitch. She squintily opened her olive eyes, whimpering at Sitri.
"Thank you," she managed. "Sitri, I truly owe you."
Sitri blinked, smiling. She chuffed in amusement. "Try to stay out of trouble for a few days, alright, Maginn?"
Maginn dipped her head. "I will," she promised. She glanced over her shoulder, sighing softly. "We'll need to keep travelling west for a few days. The pack will be looking for us."
"Well, then, we'll travel west," Sitri started, her tail lightly wagging. "We'll travel until we feel safe, then we'll rest until we're both well, and then we'll make our own pack."
Maginn smiled.
"I've always thought you would be a fine Queen," Sitri added.
Maginn wagged her tail back ā just once, as it aggravated a bite-mark at the edge of her back. She couldn't help herself. She leaned in close, licking Sitri's cheek. "And you ought to be my Lady. I'll deck you in flowers and share a den with you."
Sitri chuffed, leaning closer into her wolf-kiss. "We'll have to make it to the other side first, Magi. Save your flirts for later." She nuzzled her thick-furred neck, glancing nervously at the deep cuts marring her mate's body. She shut her eyes, making a promise between herself and the spirits overhead; whatever happens, I will take care of her.
