NEW DESIGN
The birth of a pup should always be celebrated; new life, new possibilities, and a bright future for the family. Yet, a deep sense of worry had begun to settle in the female's gut. She had lost count of just how long she endured the labor pains that grew in her belly and spiked every so often although she was certain the duration she had was abnormal. With a strained push, the pressure finally left her figure and allowed her a moment to gather her lost breath. Hardly a second passed before the faint cry of her newborns filled her ears, making her heart swell.
Only a matter of seconds passed before she realized something odd; her pups moved together and after a few moments of grooming she discovered that both cubs were joint at the hip, each lacking a fourth paw. Her heart fell as a sorrow filled frown claimed her muzzle. She had heard of this before, a horror tale among mothers; a pair of pups bound together and as far as she was aware, they never survived to reach a year of age. The two gray pups nuzzled into their mother's belly, hungrily feasting on her the milk she provided. The pair was blissfully unaware of their predicament. In a hoarse tone, the female whispered to the newborns. "Ash and Smoke." She almost chuckled at the faint irony, gazing at their gray pelts.
Over the course of the following months, the odd pair of twins grew to the best of their abilities, beginning to quarrel with each other the longer they remained connected at the hip. Their mother had begun to grow somewhat distant, attempting to find a way to minimize her future grief. The two padded along besides their mother in that off way that they had developed, body rocking back and forth with each step. It wasn't long until a speckled wolf came into view, the white female stopping dead in her tracks. The adults began to discuss something. though the twins weren't paying attention. Smoke had just nipped Ash's paw, earning a yip and an awkward tackle, sparking another rough housing session.
"Ahem." The male cleared his throat; making the two pause, Ash's ear caught in Smoke's jaw. "Who are you?" Ash chimed, quickly followed by another curious reply. "Where did ma go?" Two pairs of brown eyes darted around for any site of the familiar wolf, finding no trace. "I'm Tomima. Would you like to be part of a pack, Ash and Smoke?" The pups simply blinked at the large wolf for several moments before one spoke. "Will there be food?"
A hearty laugh left the orange-ish canine, nodding his head. "Yes, as much food as you can eat." That answer resulted in Ash and Smoke stumbling to their paws with their tails wagging in an odd way. "Let's go!" They barked, darting off in a direction only to quickly be guided by their new companion.
