Lore:
It was only Solstice's second winter, and today, she had traveled further than she ever had before. While thankfully, there had not been any heavy storms, the trees were already laden with snow, and the rivers half-frozen over with thin, crackling ice.
Solstice bent down to the river for a drink, grateful she was in neutral territory. The cold water made her shiver, but it was worth it. She licked her lips to warm them, but as she looked up, Solstice saw an animal moving on the other side of the river bank.
At first, Solstice thought it might have been a young badger pup, or perhaps a very small fox. But upon closer inspection...
Solstice's hackles prickled in alarm. It was a wolf pup!
It was one of the strangest wolf pups she'd ever seen. With a deep blue spotted pelt that looked as though it had been cut out of the night sky itself. The pup seemed to be alone, but was nonchalantly trotting along the side of the river, seemingly without a care in the world.
Concerned, Solstice watched as the young pup batted at a butterfly. Where was her mother? Surely, she couldn't have gone far. Instinctively, Solstice began to follow alongside the opposite side of the river bank. Part of her immediately wanted to swoop in, pick her up by the scruff, and carry her to safety. But if the mother was nearby, that might end up being a fatal mistake. Solstice figured this way, she could at least keep an eye on her, and only intervene if absolutely necessary.
But then, out of the corner of her eye, Solstice saw something moving. A pair of sharp green eyes, and a long feline shadow, stalking through the reeds alongside the river bank.
A fierce growl emanated from Solstice's belly. Instinctively, she charged towards the lynx with teeth bared, as the growl erupted into a vicious snarl.
The cat spat and hissed as Solstice barreled towards it. But while a young wolf pup was easy prey, it seemed the lynx had no interest in tangling with a full-grown wolf. The moment Solstice crossed to the other side, the lynx sprinted away as fast as it's legs could carry it, and vanished into some nearby brush.
Had she been with her pack, Solstice would have liked to give chase. But as they were alone, Solstice turned her focus back to the pup, to make sure she was alright.
As Solstice approached, the pup crouched low to the ground and looked up at her in terror. It hurt a bit, seeing the pup look up at her as though she were some kind of monster. She hadn't intended to frighten her so much.
Solstice crouched down low to the ground, so she was nearly nose-to-nose with the pup. She smiled, and wagged her tail slowly to show the pup that she meant no harm. Then, Solstice heard a panicked voice calling in the distance.
"Starchild? Starchild, my darling – where are you?"
Solstice gave a returning howl. A few moments later, a massive, star-studded wolf came running down the hill, with wide, frightened eyes. Solstice shivered. She had seen wolves faced with death who looked less frightened.
The strange wolf bristled slightly upon scenting the lynx and seeing Solstice. But then, seeing her pup safe and sound, the hostility melted away. The mother nearly pounced upon the young pup, rubbing her head against them and showing them with kisses, her words escaping in a breathy tumble.
"Don't you ever run off like that again – frightened me half to death – could have been killed--"
The mother stopped short when she saw Solstice watching with a smile. Instinctively, Solstice looked away, feeling embarrassed. The mother wolf stared at Solstice with a solemn expression.
"You saved her, didn't you?"
Solstice sheepishly brushed the ground with her paw. She explained that it was nothing, really – she didn't do all that much. She just happened to be there at the right time.
The mother wolf shook her head. "No, please don't try and downplay it. If you hadn't been there, and had I arrived just a second too late…"
Her voice trailed off, as the young pup looked up at her curiously. She shook her head again.
"Thank you. I only wish I could do more, but…"
The mother wolf stepped forward, and gently touched her nose to Solstice's. Suddenly, a vision rushed into Solstice's mind – of a warm, soft den, lined with pelts. The wolf's voice echoed through her thoughts.
"I know of a place. A refuge, for travelers. It will keep you safe, when you are cold, injured, or weary. All you need to do is think of it, and you'll be able to find it. That is the best gift I can give to you"
Solstice took a step back. Wait… how did this strange wolf know she was a traveler? And more importantly – what exactly was that strange vision? Was it some kind of special power?
But before Solstice could ask any of these questions, the mother was already leaving, gently nosing her pup along, as though making sure she was still there.
Solstice shivered. But out of relief this time, not of the cold. At least she knew now that pup would be safe and sound. And if such a traveler's refuge was real, it could certainly be useful on her journey… perhaps she'd find it one day.
With that last thought in her mind, Solstice continued on her journey, in search of untraveled paths.
