Jordius limped from the far south toward the mountains. He'd long left his natal pack and sought somewhere he could be free. Yet the loner life was not meant for him, but he did not have the ambitions of most males. He was far more content to help raise a new generation than to contribute to one. So, upon hearing the cry of a pup in need he jumped in to keep an eagle from capturing so tiny a wolf, so small a life hardly begun.
It could have been a disaster, of course. He was unknown to the pack and its leaders. But they stared at him, the pup and then at the bird flying away with an indignant squawk. They dipped their muzzle to him and it was at that moment he found his purpose in life. To protect a new generation, but also to be protected himself, for their was safety in numbers.
