Born a lazy and outgoing pup to Stonefur and Twig, Gemstone, her sister and the other pups had a peaceful first year of life.

Everything changed when a neighbouring pack attacked. They took their chance when the Light Walker's scouts, herbalist and hunters were out tending to their duties. Elders Stonefur, Sprig, Outsider, Twig, Fawnspot, and the pack leader, Thunderbird, put up a good fight, but ultimately lost their lives. A few of the least loyal pupsitters ran away when the fight started. The rest of them, alongside the retired sisters Springsnow and Oakspring, managed to survive long enough for the rest of the pack to start coming back.

Gemstone's hunting party was the first to return to the bloodbath. They took over the fight, giving the others a much needed respite and killing enough of the enemy wolves that the survivors decided to retreat. Gemstone wouldn't let them get away that easily though, so, enraged, she chased them down alongside Temper the scout, who had just returned, and killed them.
When they went back to the pack, Sprout and Dancing Leaves At Dawn had also lost their lives due to their injuries.

Gemstone had fought fiercely and corageously, having the highest kill count with the least number of injuries, so she rose as the new leader of the Light Walker pack. Shaken by the traumatic experience, she became standoffish and much more hostile towards any neighbouring or visiting wolves than any of the previous leaders had ever been.
