~The Grey Beta's Story~
The Grey Beta, she knows the Shadow Wolves. She goes by Grey. She never knew her parents and was raised by a kind woman who found her alone in the woods. The woman, a wild-life rehabber, kept her with a mother and daughter wolf and named her Beta. The other wolves were Gamma and Omega. Omega raised her with Gamma, but never fully excepted her. Beta was more like Cinderella.
When she grew up, Gamma and Omega found a hole in the ground. Gamma investigated it and it led to the outside world. The wild. Omega left in a second. She hated the humans and only stayed with them because she couldn't leave. Gamma followed and so did Beta.
The outside was cruel and murderous. Foxes roamed. Coyotes screamed in the night. Worst of it all was the other wolves. They howled. Omega told them not to howl with them, but Beta wanted to. She wanted to feel her voice soar into the night. So she did. It was beautiful. Omega bit her scruff to shut her up, but it was too late. The pack came. In minutes, it seemed, they were surrounded. Omega tried to negotiate, but she ended up with fangs at her neck.
Gamma ran. She was killed instantly. Beta stood still. She yelped when she saw the blood pour from Gamma's throat. Omega fought back when she hear her daughter's last cries. In a snap, she too, died. Beta whined, her care taker was dead, her playmate was dead so she knew she'd die too. She held her head high and expected to feel death, whatever death felt like, anyway. She found herself in something even worse. It wasn't death, but life, but her life felt like death.
She was at the bottom of the pack after a questioning. She didn't eat much and just helped random with random stuff, whether it was helping the healer, caring for pups or carrying in meat from a hunt. She took a special interest in medicine, but no-one let her learn. She wanted to know if she could bring back the dead. Although she never loved them, she felt guilty for Gamma and Omega's death. She still saw them though. Shadow wolves, she called them. They haunted her. They spoke to her sometimes and criticized her every move. She didn't recognize them, but she knew it deep in her soul that it was them. She was scared of them. Were they here for vengeance? She knew that they were. They couldn't kill her, right? They must've wanted instead to make her life misery and make her feel nothing. She was in a world caught between life and death, between light and darkness. The Grey Realm she called it.
It was midsummer when she was abandoned. Food had grown scarce and the pack picked up camp and left. They made sure to leave behind any dead weight. This was her and Light's Glare. Light was small for a wolf and his job was like hers. Do work wherever work was needed. Light was new, unlike her. They gathered any spare supplies that the pack might've left behind.
Light and Beta survived together for a month. They had grown extremely close and shared a sibling love. Light and Beta explored caves and holes for grubs when an angry badger emerged from one. It cut Light's fuzzy grey face and he lost sight in one eye. He seemed fine. It turned out that he wasn't. His cuts became infected. He woke up with a fever and Beta desperately searched for a cure. When he died it crushed her. She noticed that there was a third Shadow wolf, but he wasn't black like the other two. Instead he was a light, gentle grey. She fled in terror when he appeared. She cried and moaned and let herself starve and dehydrate.
Watchman found her when he was exploring his territory. He knew she was at a low point and carried her off to his camp. It reminded him of his thieving days, when he stole young wolves for his alpha. Those days were gone and over, he reminded himself.
When Beta woke up she looked up at a brown and tan wolf. "Who are you?"
"I'm King Watchman's Code." The brown and tan wolf answered. "May I ask who are you?"
"I'm The Grey Beta." She answered dazed.
"Welcome to The Watchmen Pack." He smiled kindly. "Would you rather be known as 'Grey' or 'Beta'?"
"Huh?" She cocked her head, confused.
"Of your two names?" He stated. "The Grey Beta?"
Beta's eyes widened with shock. She hadn't realized that she had replied with a full name that she didn't have. Without her realization, she heard her own voice respond with 'Grey'.
