During the lesson: Jᴀʏ Fʟɪɢʜᴛ brought a massive branch today and asked all participants to grab onto it with their jaws and hang as long as possible. It looked hilarious as they walked around the den like this for a long while, but Oʙsɪᴅɪᴀɴ determinedly kept her jaw shut and ignored the giggles of the other pups.

Lore: Bullied relentlessly by the other pups for being born with Melanism when they were only born as carriers, Obsidian was already covered in scars by the time she was 3 months old. Oftentimes, the other pups would chase her into the foul smelling Salvaging Den, where the adult wolves left their leftover rotting food to be salvaged later in the day. The den was scattered with bones and the walls were splattered with blood, spiderweb weaved around it all from already 9 years worth of Salvaging. It was not a pup-friendly environment.

Even Dove Frost, the she-wolf most protective of the mutated pups of Eclipse Keepers could not rescue Obsidian during the day, as she was always sent out hunting. Obsidian found herself becoming accustomed to the awful smell of death and decay, and unsightly surroundings that most of the wolves could not stand, since she was forced into the den day after day, only being realized when one of the adults were sent to salvage the carcasses at the end of the day. For two weeks, the chosen adult for the day would usher Obsidian back out of the den, where the other pups would be waiting to nip her ears as she slept later that night.

The time during the day she spent alone in the horrible den, she passed by rummaging through the decaying carcasses, looking for things to do. On her third day in the den, a black and red moth came fluttering into the den. It pulse a vibe that terrified Obsidian so much, she fled the den right into the waiting fangs of her pup-peers.

When the Melanistic pup was driven into the den again the next day, she spotted the moth that gave her such a fright the previous day, trapped in one of the spiderwebs. It fluttered helplessly against the trap, and a spider was crawling ominously towards it. Obsidian felt a suddenly sympathy for the moth, and delicately plucked it from the spider's webbing. The moth clambered onto Obsidian's fur to rest.

By the end of the two weeks of being sent back out of the safety of the Salvaging Den by the adult wolves that woukd find her there, Obsidian was protesting against it. Everytime, her moth would remain inside the den, and everytime she was away from it, she felt terrible. Sneaking back into the den didn't prove helpful, and she was sent away with a snarl.

Finally, she tried a new tactic. She was naturally helpful, and already knew how to salvage usable bones from the carcasses just from messing around during the day. All of the adults already hated salvaging the gross carcasses, but Obsidian had gotten used to it, and she mostly wanted to just be with her moth friend. The Melanistic pup began convincing the adults she could help. At first, most of them turned her down, but a couple of the particularly squeamish wolves began to let her help them. They were pleasantly surprised to discover that little Obsidian was a natural at carcass salvaging, and the word spread quietly amongst the rest of the pack wolves (excluding the alpha, White Fang, and his mate, Crow Call) to let her help them with their duty.

The adults knew that it was against leadership wishes to allow a pup to help with carcass salvaging, and some still refused, but many allowed it, since she was so good at it. So long as White Fang or Crow Call didn't find out... And none of them noticed the corrupted moth that was anchoring itself to the impressionable pup...

By the time new Melanistic pups were born into the Pack, Obsidian was already an apprentice and didn't bond to them like she normally should have. Her isolation in the Salvaging Den remained, and when she finally became an adult, White Fang allowed her to stay in the Salvaging Den for work so long as she also kept an eye onnthe Pups. She agreed, of course, though the pups don't exactly appreciate her presence, since she's always covered in cold blood and the scent of death.
