A devastating storm striking their tundra home in the middle of spring should have been seen as a bad omen. The wind and rain viciously beat down on the dens. Lighting clawed at the earth and thunder rattled across the land. The barren land is torn apart.
In the middle of the storm, tiny squeaks and cries ring across the mothers den. 4 squiggly pups nurse on their mother. The 5 squirms, unable to find his brothers and sisters. The herbalist apprentice takes notice. She gently grabs the pups scruff to move the frail pup to its mother. She notices the mothers skin is pale as her breathing slows. The jr. herbalists cries for help were muffled and squandered by the storm.
After the death of their mother, the pups were wasting away one by one till only 1 remained after their first 10 days. No help came, the storm raging for weeks made it to much of a risk. On the 12th dawn the little pups eyes opened to the world. His eyes opened...nothing. The world was as dark as before. He cries out for someone. The herbalists apprentice rushes over in excitement only to see milky white irises.
She looks down upon the helpless little body who'd already endured so much, and now by custom... he had to die. She turns to grab a permanent sleep concoction. Tears dribbled in her eyes. The pup squeals in confusion. She turns to glean the weak; she cant and drops the medicine, startling the pup. The storm whips across the land. The young wolf makes the decision that alters her life forever, but she doesn't know that at the time.
