Iara is a legend of Brazilian folklore, and is also well known as Mãe d'Água (Mother of water/Mother from the waters). The legend, well known in the Northern Region of Brazil, speaks of a mermaid who has part of the body in the form of a woman and the other part of the body in the form of a fish, possessing great beauty and wealth.
In the indigenous legend, it is said that Iara was the daughter of a shaman and was quite famous for being an excellent warrior. Iara's qualities aroused the envy of others, causing her to be a victim of her brothers, who united to kill her. During the ambush, Iara resisted and, in the fight, killed all her brothers. Then she ran away, fearing that her father would react badly to what had happened. Her father found her and decided to punish her, throwing her at the meeting place of the Negro and Solimões rivers. She was then saved by a fish, taking her form as she is known, part fish, part woman. In the Tupi language, the term "Iara" means "lady of the waters".
