Celestria

Celestria closes her eyes, but no clarity spring from the empty well of her mind. Grief bubbles to the surface, pressing all around her and threatens to consume her. She feels the strength leave her legs and for a moment she succumbs to it. She throws back her head and howls, and her anguish is given wings to spread across the land, searching for her lost pups.

They had been so little, too small to be given names just yet, but their bodies were vessels for her hopes and aspirations. She had so much she had wished to teach them, and they had seen hardly anything of the vast world before they vanished. How deeply she had loved them…

She concentrates again, willing her mind to show her the last place she had seen them alive and well, trotting up a hillside. She had followed them as they crested, but when she reached the top herself, they were nowhere to be found. Their scents still lingered in the air, but their paw prints could not be followed, and although she had circled the area in increasingly wide arcs, she never was able to pick up their trail again.

Celestria opens her eyes to see a lunar owl staring at her intensely from the trees. A gentle hoot punctures her muddled thoughts and she finds herself tilting her head curiously at the strange bird. All at once a voice sounds in her head and she springs into the air from the suddenness of it.

Follow she-wolf, if you wish to find your pups. Without hesitation Celestria barks at the bird, urging him to take flight and show her. The bird gracefully lifts from the branch and flies, but low enough for the wolf to follow. She ran for what seemed like hours through the biting chill of the tundra, but desperation lent strength to her paws and she was not slowed by the cold. She does not remember when the freezing air became pleasantly warm or when an enchanted forest replaced the snowy hills. The bird guided her to a totem pole, and she dithered on the spot, uncertain of what she should do next. She looked up at the bird questioningly, and the lunar owl touched his beak to the top. Rising on her hind legs, Celestria touches her nose to the top of totem, a raven. In a blink she found herself in the same forest, but now it was covered in fog. The forest seemed to have dulled in color, and she padded silently, despite crushing dead leaves under her paws. Eventually she heard a tiny squeak, and running forward, she finds herself face to face with her missing pups.They explain how they found themselves in the spirit world through the totem pole and now Celestria has been granted immortality from Zulae to visit her pups whenever she wishes to. She is the spirit of the she-wolf embodied, and she holds a paw in the spirit world and the physical world. Although her pups cannot follow her to the living forest, as they have spent too long in the spirit world unable to find their way back to the living world, Celestria visits them in waking dreams and finally, her spirit has found peace. And when you look up to the night sky, and see a constellation, a she-wolf nursing her three pups, you will see Celestria.
