Zyphire was not the pack's original favorite for her father's successor. That honor rested on the shoulders of her adopted brother, Orlan, who at a young age showed great promise. Orlan trained with their father often, learning to lead, while Zyphire in her adolescence learned at their mother's side all the many stories and legends and history of the pack. This was until Arrin, the pack's senior Echo-Keeper- -an order of priests within the pack- -spoke of Zarah's blessings on Epikaro's youngest daughter, that she would have both the strength to lead her pack and the heart to guide them, and from her training she had the wit to rule justly, to build upon what came before her. Zyphire proudly took her father's place when his time came to an end, knowing she had the gods behind her.
