The leader at the time, Fairy Floss, decided to make him a scout. The other two were growing old and their replacements were nearly grown. The odd wolf could go out and explore. And he did; it was as if being a scout changed his very personality. He was more lively than the day he went out, proclaiming his name to be "Mulberry." After this event, Fairy Floss deemed him to be one of the next scouts, much to Caesar's dismay. The young wolf would live in jealousy.
The first physical change that Mulberry underwent was the most obvious, but none genuinely noticed until it was too late. Mulberry had returned from their second scout, another successful one, with ghostlike eyes. Pups wouldn't meet their gaze, but were enthusiastic to see him nonetheless. It is a mystery as to how nowolf saw his eyes.
"They used to be grey," the older wolves would murmur once they noticed. Mulberry would lightheartedly laugh at them. He would tell the elders that their eyes deceive them, but that he was not going to hold that against them.
While less noticeable, two more things changed: the first was his claws turning to the color of bone. No wolf ever fully caught on to that; after all, how many stare at another's paw long enough to memorize who has what claws?
The second change was his skin. It used to be murky, but the green-brown hue was easily noticed by the paw-high pups. They would comment on how plantlike his paw pads were, but their words were dismissed for unfiltered puplike minds.
Every time Mulberry came back from a scouting mission, they masked paranoia. They and Raggedy Anne, the herbalist at the time, were the definition of frenemies. They were close, yes, but the herbalist put Mulberry on edge. Onlookers chalked it up to Anne's button eyes, something faer mother had — Doll had been unnerving as well, perhaps it was hereditary? — but any wolf who dared to look closer would find Raggedy Anne and Mulberry talking to each other and the plants around them. Anne seemed to know something that Mulberry wasn't a fan of faer knowing…

One day, before Mulberry turned four, he returned to the pack whilst chatting with an unfamiliar Faelcu. The Faelcu was hostile to most, but never attacked anywolf.
It hadn't been many months before that Fairy Floss passed, warning King Allure of the Faelcu and their tricky ways. The newly crowned leader was naturally wary of the Faelcu, who claimed their name to be Newt. It was a long back and forth between Mulberry, a highly experienced scout, and the young King Allure. The two didn't get along on their own, and the presence of Newt did not help any.
Raggedy Anne was still friends with Mulberry. Fae still knew something that fae was keeping from the pack.
