Fernis' pack was destroyed when he was no older than a moonling pup. His mother took him and his littermates and hid them in a small, secluded cave. He survived to adulthood and set out into the world, not really interested in joining a pack. He would live off the land - eating berries, small animals and discarded carcasses - it wasn't a particularly classy lifestyle. The common pack-wolf would regard this as shameful and low to their pride. But then again, Fernis was never truly a prideful wolf.
When he met Kevat and her growing pack, however, he seemed to change his mind. He became a part of the River Canyon Pack, certainly not because of a certain blue-grey furred she-wolf.
While other wolves may prefer to wield power, Fernis prefers the task of servitude. Helping others, to him, is just as enjoyable as being helped. There's no trade more honest than helping a fellow lupine.
