Allow All Males to Breed within the Pack

Posted 2020-11-04 09:42:10

10000% support. Males are next to useless in game as it is, and I hate that.

I think an alternative to this could possibly be an option to rotate studs around. Ie get rid of the infertility that happens when you remove a stud.

I'm not gonna explicitly say I support this idea, but I do totally think that something needs to be done to balance the genders and make Males less... totally useless.

I don't really think every male being open to breeding is going to solve this or other issues, but it is a huge shame that males are viewed as garbage in most cases. They really need to be given a way to contribute to the game in a way that females can't. Granted they have some use by not having breeding/nesting/energy alterations, but it's more like a band-aid on a missing leg kinda situation LOL

Coming back to this thread to add something: I'm open to just about any arrangement/limitation to make this work, except for being stuck with strict breeding pairs x'D As someone who currently breeds to see wild outcomes and to have a fun, unpredictable time, that concept would really put a wedge in it.

It's also not fun being stuck with yet another choice for months on end until the wolves keel over, because I'm assuming with a mechanic like this we would also be forced to pay cones to break up pairs instead of being able to chase them off. I just think it'll make things waaay too tedious and micromanagement-y. And it would wreak havoc on people who actually do have strict breeding plans if they end up regretting a pair choice or become paralyzed by choice and afraid to commit. I just think it's too tedious of a feature compared to other better alternative suggestions.

I just don't see the point of a breeding sim if we feel constantly punished or restricted for using the primary mechanic of the game. Limitations are fine but there is such thing as too much and I think that's a good example of what not to do in a breeding sim ;v;

I support this idea! I have a few males in my pack that I would love to have more use for.

@Cyraphim agreed, i support pretty much all of the popular suggestions for an alternative to the current system (although my preference is the most simple— let all males breed only within the pack with the same cooldowns as females besides the breeding male) except the breeding pairs. it just doesn't really make sense to me, and honestly i don't think attempting to emulate a realistic 5-wolf pack in a simulated 30-wolf pack is ever going to work out in a way that's enjoyable to play. it's pretty clear that there are really no notable consequences to making all males breedable, so i don't see a reason to make it more complicated for both the coders and the players

Hmm I have mixed feelings, so no certain support or no support yet. But here's some thoughts.

I like the idea of one studding male, but other males that can breed. However, I feel like EVERY male having the ability to breed might be a bit too much, and would be harder to convince devs of than perhaps a few males that can breed. So...

Perhaps 1 stud male, no matter how much territory a person has. However, for each x amount of territory slots, perhaps one other male can breed? So perhaps every 5 slots, 1 more male breeding wolf. Or perhaps, stud males can have unlimited in-pack breedings as they do now, but other males only get a few a week, or a month.

Idk. I don't think those suggestions are perfect, but I do think there's a happy medium between only one breeding male and all breeding males all the time.

Oh I also see a comment above about breeding cool downs. Not sure if that makes any sense realistically, but it kinda doesn't have to? So maybe no cool down for studs, and maybe half the female cooldown for non stud males?

@red well if the most popular suggestion is taken, which is besides the breeding male, all males can breed but only within the pack and they have the same cooldown time as females between breedings, they wouldn't have much of an impact in the game at all except lower the incentive to mass-breed, as people would own less females since males would be useful and therefore have less heats and less litters (also thereby desaturating the pup market so pups will sell for what they're worth, which helps everyone)

edit; yeah, males would basically function the same way as females except they wouldn't get pregnant lol, which actually gives males the potential to be more valuable than females for some players b/c they'd never be out of commission, although most will probably still want a good amount of females for more pups, but it would dramatically increase males' values

Yeah I mean, I feel like the slow energy regen and inability to work while nesting already helps to balance the sexes, but it definitely isn't even yet because as y'all have said, they can't pass looks or stats, so they're only useful while they're alive (which is better than not even being useful while alive in LD :omegalul: )

Not sure what the best solution is but I'm sure there is one. I think I support the idea of change, but not sure if I support any specific change suggested.
