"I wish we didn't have to do this," Jocelyn muttered as she offered Dakota a hand back inside. "I'm sorry." The two were slipping back in the window to the suite they shared as roommates. At least the sun hadn't fully risen yet; sneaking back in during broad daylight hours would be, at best, virtually impossible. The only reason they had snuck out in the first place was because of Jocelyn's inability to fully control her shifting; she had been stressing about their upcoming job assignments, as usual, and like anytime she got too afraid or upset or excited over something, she shifted whether she wanted to or not. Dakota had only followed to help her calm down.
"It's okay. All these powers can be kind of... volatile." Dakota sighed. "You can't control it anymore than anyone else can, yours is just... different."
"Mine is a pain, that's what it is."
Dakota chewed her lip and didn't answer. For her whole life she had so rarely shifted, for her own safety. She knew it took a lot out of her, especially if she did it too often, but she wasn't sure precisely what her limits were -- only that she'd never shifted against her will yet the way Jocelyn did. She felt like she might as well not be a shifter at all, for all she could help. "Come on... we need to get moving before we're late. If we get in trouble it'll just make it worse, yeah?"
Jocelyn raised a finger in a "you've got a point" gesture and quickly scurried around the room, gathering her supplies for the day. She didn't want to get in trouble; moreover, she didn't want to draw attention to Dakota, lest someone pry a bit too much. Quickly, the pair rushed out the door and down the hall together, trying to avoid suspicion.

Remington wandered down the halls, stretching his legs, as was his habit first thing in the morning. He politely greeted anyone he passed. He was later than he normally was. He had slipped out the previous night to enjoy the cool night air, and stayed out longer than he had intended, returning late. He had hit snooze a few times before finally getting up and he was sure his roommate was irritated, but he was still up and about before his first class, so he hoped nobody would notice.
He chalked it up to homesickness. He never used to sneak out, always used to be a stickler for the rules. If his older sister ever caught him now, after he lectured her about sneaking out when she was his age, he'd never hear the end of it. But he missed the relatively relaxed atmosphere of home. He blamed it on the stress of their upcoming assignments; being away from so many prying eyes made him feel like he could breathe again. He reassured himself that this was normal. A little bit of stress was a small price to pay for the confidence and security of soon receiving the plan for his life, he kept telling himself that.

A soft groan came from the top of a building. Saege lay there, watching the morning sky. Her eyes trailed after each cloud, being very attentive to the detail of movement in each cloud. Moments pass and she continues to lay there, not exactly caring if she was missing a class, or something important. She probably already knew it.

"Saege [--] Whitethorn. " A somewhat 'Scottish' accented voice spoke, as a hawk flew towards the rooftop. Mid-way through the dive, he shifted, seemingly painlessly. "You know they don't like you skipping classes." Rowan said as he landed slightly behind his sister, looking down at her.

"You know I do not care what they think, right?" Saege responded in a softer tone, with a scoff. "They already say we're 'dangerous' so why not test their theory? We do whatever we want, whenever we want, and they won't try to stop us." She looked up at him for a moment, before pushing herself up to stand, "But if you want to keep your 'good' kid reputation up, by all means, lets go to our classes."

Rowan just sighed exasperatedly, nodding at Saege before turning and quite literally walking off the edge of the roof, a White-Tailed Hawk steering upwards just as he disappeared. Saege somewhat took this as a challenge, grinning as she shifted herself, into a beautiful-colored panther, quickly scaling down the roof, into the hallways.

As they walked down the hall together, Dakota leaned over to speak quietly. "You know you don't have to worry about shifting around me, right? It's who you are."
"I don't want you to be guilty by association, you know?" Jocelyn answered, fidgeting with her jacket zipper as they walked. She kept her eyes down, focused on the floor.
Dakota sighed. "Look, I appreciate it. And it's not like I'm going to go around advertising this, my mom's been protecting me since I was a little girl for a reason. But I can handle myself. And I know they keep telling you it makes you a risk and a danger and bad and whatever else, but it doesn't. I wish you wouldn't hide it, especially not on my account."
Jocelyn just shrugged. It was easy enough to say that, for someone whose ability wasn't put on display for all their childhood peers, and now their academy peers, every time they let their emotions get the better of them. Nevermind the looks from the officials when it happened in front of them. No, she didn't want to risk subjecting her best friend to something like that, not if she could help it. She'd never forgive herself if she was the reason Dakota got ratted out and had her future ruined. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down; her racing heart told her she wasn't far off from shifting again if she failed now. Idly, she began looking for a quiet, out-of-the-way hallway to hide in if she had to. She had been doing so well, playing the part of the willing student, keeping her shifting to a minimum, until recently when the deadline for their assignments loomed near. She was afraid to ruin it now.

Feeling a bit claustrophobic from the long hallways that seemed to stretch on repetitively, Remington finally gave into the urge to step out into the open air the next time he walked past a set of exterior doors. As soon as the big doors shut behind him, he drew in a deep breath and looked up, enjoying the sunlight. It was a pleasant change from the buzzing, obnoxious lightbulbs inside. He took a few steps away from the building and stuck his hands in his pockets looking around. Raising his gaze, Remington squinted against the sun, holding one hand up to shield his eyes. He eyed the bird overhead, watching it silently.

Rowan dived towards the grounds, doing as he had done before; shifting painlessly in the air. He stood there for a moment; leaning against a wall and taking a few deep breaths as he waited for his sister to reappear.

Saege, however, had gotten distracted in a hallway. The hallway was clear and quiet, looking like not many had traveled it. She looked up and down the hallway, taking note of the peeling paint on the walls and how sounds just echoed across it as it had never heard noise before.

"Huh.."

Even that soft noise echoed softly as Saege shifted back to her human form. She had gotten distracted by one piece of art in the middle of the hallway, somewhat like a mural. Multiple different animals were depicted, multiple cat-like figures, a dog, and possibly a bird? She couldn't exactly tell as the paint had either faded or was peeled off.

Remington watched curiously as the bird dove, but wasn't in a spot to see where it landed, if it landed at all and didn't just swoop off. He stood there for another moment before curiosity got the better of him. The bird had been at a distance, yet something about it seemed familiar. He rounded the corner, stopping when he saw Rowan. He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Eh... Rowan, is it? What are you doing out here?"

Jocelyn was grateful, at least, that she had a few seconds notice before shifting, a stranged, detached tingling, like when one cut off circulation to a limb and then, when blood came back to it, it felt both like pins and needles and like it was complerely numb all at the same time. But instead of being isolated, it was across her whole body.
"Dakota," she said sharply under her breath, a note of alarm in her voice. She stopped short, so Dakota would take a step ahead before reacting and stopping as well. "Go to class, don't wait for me." She stepped behind and past her friend towards a quieter hallway.
"Joce," Dakota protested, frowning.
"Just go," Jocelyn snapped, knowing her time was limited. She gave Dakota a shove onwards on her way down the hall, turning the corner.
No sooner had she turned the corner than she felt a brief burning sensation, like the feeling after the numbness and tingling when the blood returned to the limb, but it went away quickly enough. She continued down the hall at a lope, as a tall, mottled-gray cat, notably bigger than the average housecat but still small. Not wanting to risk being followed, she took whatever turns caught her fancy, mind unfocused on anything but escaping to be alone.
Running like that, it didn't take long for her to find herself a bit lost in the maze of hallways, trotting down empty ones she didn't recognize. In fact, these passages looked all but abandoned. Still on edge, she looked around, hoping for some sense of direction, and then let out a worried mrowr.

Rowan just looked up at Remington, cocking his head to the side confused. "Why are you out here? Don't you have a class currently?" He paused before speaking again, not waiting for a response. "Nevermind, I can't be that much of a hypocrite. I'm waiting for my sister, She normally doesn't take this long to get here.."

Rowan had his hands in his pockets, his brows furrowed in confusion. "I hope I don't have to go looking for her again."

Saege was now walking back and forth before the 'mural,' wondering what it was, who was depicted, and a lot more. She occasionally ran her hands through her hair, more-or-less forgetting why she had gotten to this hallway in the first place.

Remington shrugged. His first teacher was sick that week, and rather than bring in a substitute, he had given reading assignments to "exercise one's individual discipline to complete work without being babysat every step of the way," said with the derogatory inflection only a Snape-like professor with pretentious little round glasses could pull off. It was why he let himself wander outside; he'd always get distracted, enjoying the fresh air, and he wasn't compromising his attendance (perfect, so far, of course, and he prided himself in that). He chewed his lip thoughtfully.
"Couldn't tell you where she is. I didn't pass her in the halls when I was inside, though, can tell you that much. You want a hand trying to find her, if she doesn't show up soon?"

Twitching her tail back and forth nervously, Jocelyn continued down the hall rather than turning back. Surely, she thought, it would lead her back in some sort of circle back to hallways she recognized? After all, it was a building, it wasn't like getting lost in the woods. She couldn't get too lost, right?
But the hallways she took just seemed to lead her farther and farther from where she wanted to be. She stopped again and let out a louder meow, just to see if there would be any answer, any indication of someone in the hallways.
