Some Changes To Battling?

Dialogue for Failing Latch This is a tiny change I'd love to see, but the dialogue that comes with failing Latch hardly ever made much sense to me. The dialogue currently claims that you tried to latch onto your target, but missed. However the stat that influences Latch is Strength, not anything like Speed or Smarts. So I think it would make more sense if the dialogue for failing Latch was something more like "You attempt to latch onto the [Insert enemy here] but couldn't get a good enough grip on it". Higher Stats Giving Better Bonuses, and Lower Stats Giving Worse Penalties In my opinion, it's a little silly for my 402 Strength Lead to only get a +1 on any Strength-related checks against a level 1 Deerwolf, even though Eclipsing Light's Strength is guaranteed to be far, far higher than that of that Deerwolf. I bet it must be even sillier than that, for players with Leaders that are even stronger than that. So, to add a little less reliance on RNG alone for battling, and grant further incentive to having high-stat Leaders, having the stat bonus on rolls should increase based on just how much higher your Leader's given stat is compared to that of your opponents, maxing out at +3. Perhaps being around 1-99 stat points higher than the opponent in a given stat could give +1, 100-249 points higher could give +2, and 250+ points higher could give +3. Additionally the opposite should be true, with having lower stats being more punishing against really powerful opponents. Even with lots of luck on their side, there's no way that a mere 70 Strength Wolf should be able to beat up and win against a level 20 Grizzly Bear! A Way for Wisdom To Impact The First Turn A first turn stat check involving Wisdom, so there is some purpose to training up your Leader's Wisdom stat! In D&D, your character's Wisdom stat can have influences on their Perception rolls, which if successful, can allow the character to detect hidden enemies. So to put Wisdom to use in battle, there could be a Wisdom check scenario at the beginning, where the opponent attempts to sneak up on your Leader. If your Leader fails their roll, they fail to detect the opponent in time, and the opponent gets a bonus attack on your Leader. If your Leader succeeds their roll, your Leader detects the opponent and stops it before it can get close enough to get a sneak attack on your Leader, allowing your Leader to get the first move. Edit with another suggestion for changes to battling Remove the "Base Modifier" on Bite, or... Either removing the "Base Modifier" that impacts Bite entirely, or explaining in-fight what exactly that Base Modifier is. Whether I'm fighting a Level 2 Whitetail Buck or a Level 18 Grizzly Bear, I always seem to get an unexplained -1 "Base Modifier" on my lead's Bite attack. I don't have any Talents on my Lead that would imply any negative modifiers to his Bite attack, and this specific negative modifier isn't applied to any other attack. So what is the cause and/or purpose of this negative modifier? |
