4 Year Anniversary!

On the 19th October 2020 we opened Wolvden to the public.  Today we're celebrating our 4 year anniversary.

It's been another great year and we're happy to celebrate what we've released, and what's coming next!

Before we get into it, we'd like to state that going forward, our future anniversary celebrations will include EXP boosts, and any development updates planned around this time of the year will be held back to be launched with the anniversary.

This year, we are celebrating with an EXP boost, our last festive anniversary decor set, a development update, and our usual updates of how the year has gone.

Alright - let's jump in!

The Rundown

As we'll be covering a large amount of content in this news post, we've broken it down into sections so you can quickly scan through to find what you'd like to read first.

Looking Back - an overview of updates and new features we've had over the past year.
Roadmap - addressing plans for the future and what we have in store!
The Meat - all of the stuff in today's massive update!
Anniversary Gift - a bundle you can claim!
Anniversary Raffles - special raffles in honour of today!
Thank You - as always, we must extend our thanks to all of you.

Looking Back

Below are links to all the development updates we've had in the last year, including the full month events, with links to their respective news posts:

The Lunar event has had monthly updates and expansions of content with dozens of new encounters and enemies, as well as shop content.  This is spread out in multiple posts across the year.
Event: Coigreach
Update 25: Codebreaker and Roadmap
Update 26: Achievement Expansion, Nesting Pose, and Advent Calendar
Update 27: Explore Expansion and New Marking - loads of new encounters, enemies, and prey to find, as well as the release of the Orca marking shape
Event: The Matchmaker - new dateable NPCs were added
Update 28: Quality of Life Updates and Server Migration
Event: Springtide Howl Fayre - brand new June event, launching again in April 2025
Event: Cataclysms
Update 29: NBW Exclusive Marking Expansion
Event: Halloween Spectacle  - the storyline for this event launched this year

Roadmap

We're not planning an official roadmap for this coming year and are instead going to list some projects that we are working on.  We find that setting an expected time for projects seems to tempt delays in the form of unexpected events - server issues, illnesses amongst staff, and other personal matters.  This leads to a lot of pressure on what is otherwise a small team, so instead of a targeted roadmap, here are the projects that we currently have planned:

Coding Focused ⌨️

Our long-awaited groups update - this was heavily delayed by the server switch, which is still ongoing to an extent, and we hope to bring you the groups update within the next couple of weeks
Hunting expansion - king of the hunt (POKOT)
Enclave shop
General quality of life updates and bug fixes

Art Focused 🎨

Themed seasonal Raccoon Wares updates
2 new mutations
Possibly a new variant
More encounters added to each existing event
More wolf encounters and battles for regular explore
Raven and Crow traders in explore

The Meat

Addressing the Bugbox

We've noticed some concern over the Bugbox having a backlog.  We wanted to address this today.

We have four years' worth of backlog at this point.  Over 1300 bugs are waiting to be fixed.

As we've tried to tackle this backlog, we've run into a number of issues:

* The bug is very old and we can't reproduce it ourselves, meaning that we likely have fixed it at some point in the past.
* The bug has very limited information.
* We are unable to reproduce it, and it has very few people other than the reporter experiencing it (in some cases, only the reporter).
* The bug seems related to server lag or some other one-off instance that we cannot reproduce.
* The report contains links to wolves that no longer exist, meaning we can't check the effects of the bug.
* Screenshots provided have been removed from their image hosts (particularly with the recent changes to Discord).
* The reporting player has become inactive in the interim time since reporting the bug.

Amongst these we find perhaps 1 in 10 bugs that we can actually do something about, and a lot of the times those bugs are small typos ("lihgt" instead of "light", or "the the") or display issues (something is configured weird on mobile, or something has the wrong colour in Dark theme).

We're not saying this to downplay the importance of typos and display bugs as they are essential building blocks of a functional website, but they don't hold the same weight as pages that are inaccessible or game features that don't work how we say they should.

When we come to try and fix bugs, wading through these is very much like swimming upstream - it's not an efficient use of our time.  So we have decided to do a (hopefully) one-time purge of the Bugbox:

Any bugs that are at least 1 year old and that have 2 or fewer players saying they're experiencing it will be set to "Needs More Information" with an auto-close of 30 days.

If your bug report is caught by this and you are confident you're still experiencing your bug, you just need to reply to the bug report and it won't auto-close.

This is targeting over 1000 of those 1300 bug reports, so we hope that it'll really help us with refocusing on bug fixes going forward.

Why does it matter that only 1 or 2 people are experiencing a bug?

Bugs don't tend to happen in isolation.  All players are affected by the same code, so in 99% of cases we would expect the bug to affect all players, or at least all players with a specific condition applied to their account (for instance, a specific Talent picked).  If a bug is only being reported by 1 person and nobody else comes along to upvote it, we begin by assuming that there is a misunderstanding, or it was a weird glitch that happened because of something outside of our control (player's device acting up, player's internet connection being particularly slow, server lag, etc.).

How are we going to prevent another Bugbox purge?

Well, nothing is guaranteed, but we have some plans for updates to the Bugbox to make it more functional for us as developers.  This involves tagging bug reports for the areas of the game they affect, as well as a list of bugs that have been claimed and are under investigation but are also waiting for a developer response.

We hope that these developments will help us with organising the bug reports in a way that makes it easier for us to handle them.

How can I help?

If you want to help us with bug reports (thank you!) then the best thing you can do after the purge is go through our Bugbox search, pick any bug report, and try to follow the instructions given by the reporter.  If you experience the same problem, upvote the bug, and add your own comment if you feel you have additional information to give to our coders.

When is this happening?

We plan to purge the Bugbox on Monday 21st October 2024.  After this, we welcome reporters commenting on their own reports if they are still occurring.

Thank You, Reporters

We just want to carve out a section of this news post to say "thank you" to those of you who have reported bugs in the past - especially those who regularly report bugs, and those who help to respond to bug reports in the case of misunderstandings around game mechanics.
