I just realised...

If a leader dies, and the new leader (past deputy) does aswell before being able to appoint a new deputy, the medicine cat has to appoint a new leader...

So? Shatteredhope, the cold, atheist medicine cat who has the occasional suicidal thoughts, has to appoint a new leader. Just... just think about that for a second...
