"Let's walk you through what's going to happen," she said. "We're going to go meet one of the sentries and let them know we're here. After that, we can either go straight for the Alpha and ask her if you can join, or we can stop by the herbalist's den and see what's happened to the hunters. Which would you prefer?" |

"Lusserina," he said, "and friends. You've made it. Aluria said you were coming back, but it was hard to believe." "Yes," Lusserina said. They had probably figured that she was dead. "This is Rebel, Silverstripe, and Sunflower. We were hoping to find out what happened to my hunting party." And to see if they can join the pack, she didn't say, probably because it would send Rebel into a spiral. The other wolf winced. "You'll have a time trying to get through the herbalist's den. They're not letting anyone in." Exactly what Lusserina figured, and exactly what she didn't want to hear. "I know the herbalist." She did. He was a huge sadist. "He'll let me in," she said, because if he didn't, she had dirt on him. "You're welcome to try," the sentry said and nodded them in. They entered the pack's living quarters and Lusserina led them over to the herbalist's den. There were a few eyes on her companions, being new to them, but she paid them no mind. She only hoped that Rebel would do the same. The herbalist's den was a huge cave in a hill. It smelled of bitter herbs and medicines of all kinds, but beyond that, Lusserina could smell the heavy scent of blood. Naturally, they were stopped the second they walked in, blocked by a swarm of apprentices all lined up and watching the herbalist grind down several herbs. She couldn't see the injured hunters. They must have been further in. "If you're not here to lend a helping paw, then get out," the herbalist said from the corner as he mixed medicines. "Tasar," Lusserina said, "what happened?" Tasar stopped his mixing and strode over to the quartet, looking them over pointedly. "You do not appear to be injured. And yet, you are still in my domain. Tell me, are you deaf, or do you want to be injured?" "Tasar," Lusserina said again, "just tell me what happened and then I'll go. I don't even need to see them, I just need to know." Tasar looked like he was going to argue, but looked the quartet over again and seemingly decided not to. "Bite marks," he said. "Like that of a wolf's. But they're big. Too big. No wolf I know has a jaw that large. "There," he said. "You know. Now get out." Lusserina nodded and ushered her group out of the herbalist's den. "That... went better than expected, honestly," she said. Seeing her group's expressions, she winced. "I promise that the Alpha is much nicer. He's just... like that." |
