I kinda don't want it to get too complicated, so maybe we're horses that are captured and put in stalls? Two groups of horses are separated by a fence, and grow to dislike each other maybe?

Yeah, I do like the idea of Rivals, whether modern or ancient. OOOOOH, what about 1800s cowboy rivals? Two ranches?
