Reduced Reliance on RNG (from the perspective of a game maker)

Latch fails a lot. I've lost (on a level 17 lead) to a level 2, just because I was trying to latch. Rest rarely works as well. Honestly, anything 10 levels below me shouldn't even manage to do more than 1-2HP in damage over the whole fight. It should be a pretty quick kill on my lead's end--latch, crush, won. But nope. Too often latch keeps missing, they keep hitting. I've also found, especially in dream-world, that even in creatures several levels below me...I could try and latch multiple times and never manage it. But one missed latch on a level 15 could easily put my level 17 at a severe disadvantage with no way to overcome it (and I'd lose). I've tried latching twice on a lvl 13 and after both missed, just tried to bite to reeven health but still ended up losing because of those two failed latches put me too far 'behind' in the battle. (Now I'm at lver 600LT earned for the event, so overall pretty darn good, but it really put a light on how RNG heavy the battling was when something was actively at 'stake' in each fight. And man did it hurt to lose to something five levels lower than me let alone FIFTEEN levels lower than me). |

I spent a lot of time trying to be strategic since EA and Latch is simply not reliable. Even with a lucky foot in use, it's very much a 50/50 on the whole encounter battle - you either do well and it goes your way, or you get obliterated (or nearly obliterated). I'm pretty sure the only reason I am consistently winning lately is because I'm just lucky, fully healing my wolf, only fighting when I have above 50% energy, and feel it's worth the risk. It's simply not reliable a strategy to use for everyone and until RNG is fixed, never will be. |

Oh no, Rho, it's nothing personal against you. It's just that sharing our own experiences with the "latch" move leads to a greater understanding of how broken the battle system is. It's excellent that it works for you! |

Oh no! Def appreciate the advice! My luck is just crap and well...in a system that relies totally on luck it shows xD The only reason I managed what I did with this event is my day job is incredibly dead right now due to covid so I'm stuck at a computer 8hours a day. |

It's not the first time I've seen the latch method suggested in this thread, iirc (if not here, I've definitely seen it somewhere in talk regarding the RNG). Until the battle system is fixed or altered so it's not so blatantly dependent on RNG rolls, it just won't be a helpful solution to people at all (because people can still fail incredibly even using it, and then get confused and dismayed that *they* are doing something wrong, and not the RNG). So it's nothing personal, it's just...bone deep exhaustion. No method of battle will truly be able to shine until the system itself is fixed. |

Why I don't use latch in battle. That was WITH lucky feet. The Pherris Vagabond chases you and hits just one last time for 2 damage. Total energy used: 19. You are wounded and have lost 2 HP. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 3 damage. You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. You are wounded and have lost 3 HP. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 4 damage. You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. You are wounded and have lost 3 HP. You rest a bit and recover 3 HP. You are wounded and have lost 3 HP. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 4 damage. You are wounded! You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 4 damage. You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 4 damage. You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 5 damage. You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 5 damage. You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. The Pherris Vagabond has broken free from your grasp! You crush the Pherris Vagabond with your teeth for 2 damage. You bite the opponent and lock your jaw on it. The Pherris Vagabond attacks you for 4 damage. You try to bite the Pherris Vagabond but miss. Used a Lucky Foot! The Pherris Vagabond lunges at you, but you dodge and take only 3 damage. The Pherris Vagabond anticipated your attack and outsmarted you. They have the initiative. |

Is the success of latch potentially tied to stats? Like more strength = better latch? Sorry, I've never really investigated the mechanics of it before lol. |

The thing is – we don't know. My lead strength is 182 and it doesn't seem to help her much tbh. |

Oof, yeah, probably not not strength then. |
