The Cyclone Chronicles

do NOT post here. this is read-only. thank you.

In the beginning, there was nothing.

Then, light.
It was never for the wolves to know who, or what, created the world they lived within. It was not for them to know what put the sun in the sky to heat the earth, nor who crafted each and every plant with the care and gentle touch of a mother worrying over her young. Nor did they care to know who created the plant-eaters to roam the world they’d so carefully crafted.

But every wolf knew their origin; what put them on this world, and why.

The plant-eaters, while filled with grace and beauty, also devoured the planet greedily; eating each and every plant that had been created so carefully. They stormed the planet like a disease, bringing with them the end of all life. Thus, the first predators were born.

In the east, the Creators bestowed life upon the deepest shadows. These creatures were gifted with stealth and power, adorned proudly in their stripes and spots. Some were given long legs so that they may chase down even the swiftest of prey. Others were given dark pelts and reflective eyes, so that they may hunt in the dead of night without a chance of being seen. These were the wild cats, and they were beloved by the Creators for their silent step.

In the south, the Creators brought to life logs that floated ever-slowly in the deepest, murkiest rivers. They gave them wide mouths filled with sharp teeth; gave them legs and a powerful tail so that they may strike at prey in the water and outside of it. Their wooden skin hardened into impenetrable armor, so strong that even the sharpest hoof couldn’t hope to defend itself. These were the river beasts; the crocodiles and alligators, and they were beloved by the Creators for their powerful bite.

In the north, the Creators breathed life into huge, lumbering swells of earth. Gave them thick fur so that they might survive even the coldest of climates. Gave them a stomach that could devour anything that crossed their path. Their paws were said to be so large they could crush anything with a single, crushing swipe. They say that these beasts would devour so much they could sleep entire seasons away without the threat of starving. These were the bears, and they were beloved by the Creators for their unmatchable strength.

But the plant-eaters had been there far longer than the predators, and they were prepared. They grew long ears to listen for the silent step of the wild cats. They grew strong, gnashing teeth and powerful jaws to contest the river beasts. They grew long, fast legs to carry them far from the bear. And all of them traveled together, so that they may warn each other of the approaching dangers the Creators had made for them. So long as they outnumbered the predators, they were safe.

The Creators watched in dismay as their predators failed to capture the plant-eaters, powerless to stop the overwhelming horde of prey from devouring their beloved creation. In an act of desperation, the Creators made two creatures in the west; where the plants were all but devoured. From the wild cats, they gave these new creatures swift, powerful legs to travel for long hours without tiring. From the river beasts, they gave these new creatures strong, powerful jaws and gnashing teeth to take down even the strongest of prey. From the mighty bear, they gave these new creatures thick, heavy fur so that they might survive harsh climates and crushing blows without fail.

But they gave these new creatures something else, too.

They gave them loyalty. So that they may stick together, to travel and hunt together, to fight and devour even the most difficult prey.

These creatures were called the Wolves, and the Creators loved them best. They took the names Thunder Weaver and Sky Strider, and together, they drove the plant-eaters into submission, allowing the plants to grow back in full. Thunder Weaver and Star Strider not only loved the hunt, but they loved one another, and together they birthed countless litters to spread across the world. As they spread, they changed; some growing longer, some growing smaller; some with thick fur, some with their fur cut short. But the tie that connected all of them was the ancient rite that beckoned to each and every one of them.

Hunt.

Cyclone Pack Territory ; wip

Premise

The territory that the Cyclone Pack inhabits has long since been cursed with terrible, terrible storms - none like any other in the world. Being caught out in one of these storms is most certainly a guarantee for a swift and painful death; whether it be the lightning that crashes from the sky, the wind that steals the breath from your lungs and throws you off your paws, or the rain that threatens to drown you even while you walk on solid ground - being out of shelter during one of said storms is unadvisable at least.

The only reason the wolves don't leave the cursed territory is how well it provides for them outside of the storms. Even during the winter the wolves never want for food or supplies; a wide array of prey and herbs are available to them at all times. Said herbs and prey aren't typically available in the mountains, especially out of season - it's almost as if despite the curse, the land is blessed as well.

Cyclone Camp
Cyclone made their home in a deep, complex cave system at the top of their mountain territory. The Caves keep them safe from the intense storms, and have many entrances that connect and hive together all over the mountain. Although, most of their lived-in dens are sequestered together near the top where it's the safest.

Cyclone Roles ; wip

x. the Pathfinder

The Pathfinder is a wolf blessed with the extraordinary ability to navigate through the intense storms that haunt the Cyclone Pack.  The Pathfinder is the leader of the pack, and responsible for keeping the wolves under their care safe from the storms.  They will often go out into the storms to guide any stragglers home or to the nearest shelter, keeping them protected until the storm has passed and it's safe to go home.

x. the Herbalist

The Herbalist is responsible for the pack's health and general safety around herbs. Because of the frequent storms around the area, the Herbalist is usually kept busy making sure all of the members of Cyclone Pack are in tip top shape for their best chance of survival.

Using a secret mixture of herbs, the Herbalist can also put themselves into a dangerous trance-like state to speak with the deceased and, on very rare occasion, the Gods themselves. However, invoking Sky Strider and Thunder Weaver is far more dangerous than simply speaking with the dead: the Gods have a reputation for being irate with whoever disturbs them.

The mixture itself is a secret that's closely guarded by the Herbalist, and is unknown to any other wolf in the pack. Though, even if they did know the recipe,  its doubtful they would try it themselves. There's no telling how the dead would react to a wolf unfamiliar to them, and the effect the mixture has on the herbalist themselves is quite potent. After speaking with the dead, its not uncommon for the herbalist to fall ill for several days, unable to even feed themselves.

x. the Warhound

the Warhound is responsible for preparing hunting patrols, arranging and planning scouting missions, and serving as a bodyguard for the Pathfinder. They're typically either the Pathfinder's mate, or an elder - and more experienced - Thunder Claw who has seen their share of battles. The Warhound also serves as the Pathfinder's Right Paw, lending an ear and offering advice whenever its called for.

In the case of the unexpected death of the Pathfinder, the Warhound becomes acting alpha while another Pathfinder is sought out and trained. Once the next Pathfinder is sufficiently prepared, the Warhound steps down - and is replaced by another wolf to act as Warhound for the newest Pathfinder.

x. the Storm Seekers
Storm Seekers are the wolves who traverse the territory and those neighboring them, learning the lay of the land and learning it by heart. Scouting out possible escape routes to speaking with allied packs of various territories, the life of a Storm Seeker is never a dull one. However, their most important job by far is keeping their weary eyes turned to the horizon. At the first sign of any sort of approaching storm, they send out echoing howls to warn any hunters to return home and to return swiftly, lest they be caught within the unforgiving gales.

'Storm Seeker' is considered the most dangerous role you can take in the Cyclone Pack, including that of the Pathfinder. For while the Pathfinder may enter a storm with the ability to leave it, the Storm Seekers find themselves staring down the storms on a daily with much less chance of survival.

x. the Thunder Claws
The Thunder Claws take up the rest of the pack roles within Cyclone; though there are more specific sets of roles within the over arching branch of Thunder Claws. Thunder Claws make up the hunting, pupsitting, and elder population.

↳ Hunters
are expected to provide for the pack, and earn first pick of the kill for their service.

↳  Pupsitters
are responsible for the safety of the pack pups once their weaned and their parents are called back into service. Pupsitters are expected to lay their life down on the line in order to secure the future of the Cyclone Pack.

↳  Elders
are wolves who have reached the age of seven years old and have retired from their active service. They spend most of their time in camp, enjoying their retirement. They, along with young pups, get the second pick of the kill.

x. the Apprentices

When wolves grow to one year, they are promoted from Pup to Apprentice and moved from the Nursery into the Apprentice's Den. Apprentices are expected to show initiative, rather than being mentored by one specific wolf, they may offer to go along with the Hunting Team, or sit in for one of the Pupsitters to take a break. However, it is unordinary to have an Apprentice try to tag along with a Storm Seeker. Such an act is widely regarded as foolish due to the dangerous nature of their job.

Wolves only graduate from their apprenticeships once they have done through two years of training and the Pathfinder considers them ready to take on the role of a Thunder Claw. When this occurs, a ceremony is held, and they are moved into the larger Thunderstone Cavern with the rest of the pack.

Pathfinder Shasta

"We come from different places, but we have the same name.
Cause we were born for this."
Theme: Born for This.

Status:
Deceased

Backstory:

Shasta was born in to a reputable German Shepherd breeder in New York City,  and was quickly sold as the pick of the litter to a quaint little family in the Upper East Side. However, it quickly became apparent that she was not meant for apartment life, and though she loved her owners dearly, she was always full of an abundance of energy that had her chewing up furniture and destroying other property. She was hardly ever let out of the small apartment other than for the occasional walk and bathroom break, so when her family decided to take her with them on their family vacation -- she was ecstatic. The vacation was a road trip hitting many of the National Parks - and a suspicious amount of games of fetch.

It wasn't until they reached Montana was Shasta abandoned, her human throwing a tennis ball out of the car before quickly driving off when she excitedly left to fetch it. Left behind without a hint of any sort of survival training, Shasta hesitantly explored the land -- quickly losing her way once after leaving the road. It wasn't until the distant smell of rain tickled her nose did she feel something; a tug in her chest that compelled her to follow the scent of the approaching storm.

Herbalist Foxglove

"the future's looking bleak, your will to live is weak
but honey, hold on for me."

theme song
: butterfly's repose by Zabawa

Status: Retired

Backstory:

Foxglove was born in a pack from a faraway coniferous forest, renown for their pacifism and skill with exotic herbs. Her early life was spent following closely in the footsteps of their most skilled herbalist, from which she took her own vow of pacifism: promising to do no harm, and to heal any who needed her, no matter what they had done.  She grew in both skill and beauty, and was highly anticipated to become one of the Briar Pack's best Herbalists. However, despite her love for her pack and her people, her soul was full of wanderlust. So at the young age of one and a half, she bid goodbye to her loved ones and left the Coniferous Forest.

Foxglove traveled far and wide, searching for a place to call her home. Crossing prairie, meadows, and dozens of forests, and making friends and allies with whomever she met. She spent some time in various packs, offering a healing paw and teachings to whoever was willing to learn, but she never stayed long - her heart still longing for more. In her travels, she not only taught other herbalists what she knew; but learned from them: learning of their herbs and how to best use them.

It wasn't until she found herself helping a recently wounded Tempest, laughing along to Shasta's dry wit did she feel something inside her heart loosen and settle. She had found her home. When the role of herbalist was offered to her, she accepted graciously, and became the first Herbalist of the Cyclone Pack.

Thundering Tempest

"Turn your face towards the sun, let the shadows fall behind you.
Don't look back, just carry on -- and the shadows will never find you."
theme: Towards the Sun

Status: Deceased

Backstory

Tempest was born in a single pup litter to the alpha pair of the Typhoon Pack. As their Pathfinder was nearing the end of his life, Tempest was highly anticipated to become the next Pathfinder, and was immediately thrust into training. He spent much of his early life learning to navigate the territory, as well as being put in class after class of tracking -- a skill he never could seem to excel in. As he aged, it slowly became abundantly clear that he had not in fact inherited the blessing of Storm-Gazer. Despite this, Tempest's father - a grizzled old wolf by the name of Wise Badger - thought it best that Tempest continue his training.

Wise Badger's decision would soon come to save his son's life. A neighboring wolf pack had been eyeing the territory with interest, intrigued by the semi-frequent lightning strikes that would cause the tips of the tall pines to sizzle before extinguishing in the pouring rain. Hemelstorm Cult, they called themselves, and after months of small border skirmishes causing losses on both sides -- a large battle finally broke out between the two packs.

Both alphas of Typhoon would lose their lives in that final battle, but to prevent their pack from being completely devoured by the cult, Tempest could only watch in horror as the elder Pathfinder baited the leader of Hemelstorm straight into one of the worst storms that had ever touched the territory. Neither of them would make it out alive. With their Pathfinder dead, the Typhoon pack slowly but surely disbanded, fearing the storms and what would happen without a leader to save them from them. Only Tempest remained: stubborn and blaming himself for not being worthy of Storm Gazer's blessing. He managed to survive until the age of two before finding himself caught in a storm -- one he feared too strong to escape from. Still believing his guilt, he was ready to surrender to the storm and to his own death before a pair of teeth dug him into his scruff and dragged him to safety.

When he awoke, he found himself pressed up against a smaller warm body -- a dog who introduced herself as Shasta, and scolded him for being out during such a dangerous storm. Recognizing the spirit of the Pathfinder within her, he swore his life to her, and eventually fell in love with the caring German Shepherd. Together, they founded Cyclone, where Tempest swore Hemelstorm Cult would never grace their borders again.

Pathfinder Pondhawk

I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
Don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes

Theme: Numb

Backstory:

Pondhawk was born Horizon, the single pup litter from a mistaken pregnancy of one of Tundra Runner's daughters. Although Horizon was quickly adored and pampered by the pack, it wouldn't take long for disaster to strike the young pup. Due to the tampering of outside forces, a wolf with steps of shadows crept into the Cyclone Camp and stole the young puppy away to be raised in a far off pack known only for their local legends.

Although Cyclone searched desperately for any sign of the lost pup, there would be no trace of scent left for them to follow; for this was the work of vengeful Gods, and vengeful Gods are rarely ever so accommodating. However, when Pathfinder Shasta began to lose her sight, she began to receive visions from a wolf of a sparkling white pelt, promising the return of the Destined Child. Meanwhile, in his new home, Horizon was renamed Eastern Pondhawk, and conditioned to forget the little memories he had of his mountainous home.

There, he was raised to fear the world outside the territory lines; told by those who raised him that if he tried to leave -- he would be killed. Slowly, painfully; without mercy. However, Pondhawk never could quite shake the feeling that he wasn't where he was supposed to be. Despite his reservations, Pondhawk was raised to become an apex predator; learning to be vicious enough to make their local deity proud. Or so he had been told.
