Ability to Opt-out of Religiously-tied Events

Posted 2023-12-21 14:35:16
Yeah I see absolutely no reason to not let people opt out, I'm actually surprised they still can't. Clearly this event is upsetting or uncomfortable for quite a few people. Which at best defeats the point

Plus it'd make me less anxious about missing anyone's note that they don't want gifts.

I see no reason not to not let folks opt out! For me, christmas is largely secular however I know that's not the case for everyone. Big support :] it seems like a very reasonable, fairly simple fix to let there be a toggle option

I'm all for letting people opt out of any event they want and for any reason they want. As far as the religious tie-ins, I'm afraid that Christmas in particular, (and Easter to a lesser extent) has become so widely celebrated by so many diverse people with so many secular aspects, that the direct religious associations are secondary to the secular, if considered at all.  So it's easy to consider it not a religious holiday at all, especially for things like game design.  Game developers work with it as a major global celebration, taking in the "popular" or "majority" view of the event, much like Valentine's Day, and unless they're including active religious symbols, they probably don't consider it a religious celebration regardless of initial origins.  Gift giving is common to many celebrations this time of year.  I get that the 25th is associated with Christmas.  But again, that's because it's when a majority of events occur even without religious ties anymore, and that date was usurped from Saturnalia to begin with.  I have a few Jewish friends who celebrate Christmas secularly, one of which has said she's never considered it a religious holiday in the first place.  I have Christian friends who consider it totally secular, and others who consider it exclusively religious.  So, the opinions on the religious merit of it are not standard.  Everyone has different opinions on what qualifies it as religious or not.  That being said, I will again emphasize, I fully support anyone being able to opt out of any event for any reason!  If you find it religious, or personally distasteful, or just plain don't want to participate, there should be a means to make it so!
