Any Tips or Pointers for A Beginner Digital Artist?
Posted 2020-12-17 08:47:30

Hello, I’m Alpha~

I didn’t know anywhere else other than here to put this.

I was wondering if there is anyone or a few people who can give some tips or pointers for a starting artist? I tried to do a digital sketch on my phone from scratch but that went wrong but I would really love to get back into art. I’ve never really done digital art before so I was looking for some tips/pointers? How did you start? Where did you get your inspiration? How long did it take for you to finally be happy with your art style?

I started with a newly downloaded app of my iPad and stylus. With my experience I got a few things to say. For one, digital seemed to be on a hole other level before. If trying to draw(with a stylus at the time) wasn’t hard enough I had not idea what I was doing. I would say get to know the program your using. Watch tutorials on how to use basically anything you don’t understand. Whether that is masks, shading or whatever else. If you have a specific things you need help with I could probably help/answer them. Though not specifically for any program other than Procreate.

Overall, it felt like I was re-learning how to draw with digital. It just takes time to get used drawing in a screen, using your program, learning how to make your art look good. I would say just keep practicing and trying to learn. Also importing brushes(they can be free) for your program might be good. I found that the brushes provided in my program didn’t really work with how I draw. This is also something you’ll need to learn is brushes. They can really hav e great or bad effect on your digital art(at least for me).

This is kinda ramble but I hoped I said somethings that might help!

Thank you! I am planning on getting ProCreate the second I get that iPad. It’ll be the first app I get. I am also planning on doing all that stuff you stated, watching video tutorials, getting to know my brushes, etc. If I need help or even just a second opinion, I might just message you!

**If you can, I would recommend drawing on a computer with a tablet (it's easier imo), but if you can't using a phone still works! IbisXPaint is a good program. I've had experience with it, and it's got lots of options. The blending is a little sucky though. Procreate is probably the best mobile program, but I've never used it as I draw digitally on my computer with a tablet.

I started art by just starting. I honestly don't even remember, I've been drawing so long! xD But for digital, I found out about digital art from speedpaint videos online and I thought, "Hey, that looks cool" so I downloaded Fire Alpaca (a free art program. It only works on Windows and Mac though :<) and initially started out with a mouse and a touch screen pen (yikes).

I usually get inspiration by looking at other people's amazing artwork, or just desire to create.

Oh goodness, compared to my art style now, it took years. But, your art style is always growing and evolving as you go on in your art journey. Currently, I'm trying to add more realism to my style, so don't fret if you're unhappy with your style. I recommend referencing styles you like, and obviously real pictures of whatever you're drawing.

Now, for tips for digital art on it's own, learn the short cuts xD they're life savers. I've been drawing digitally for over a couple years and I'm just now practicing the keybinds lol. Please learn the programs and follow the tutorials. I say from experience, because when I first started, I almost gave up cause I couldn't figure out how to deselect something (for my program, it's control D). Give yourself some time to learn the program so you don't get frustrated (totally not me hahaaaaa-...).

So I decided to start off on paper using this reference:

This is what I began with...

After editing it and outlining it...

This is the product before I transfer it to ibisPaint. I feel like I should maybe add a little more...? Any pointers or comments would help!

UPDATE:

Transferred to ibisPaint and edited. Semi-final project:
