Inbreeding Warning Pop-Up

Inbreeding Warning Pop-Up
Posted 2021-01-01 23:32:45 (edited)

Hi devs!

Today, I accidentally inbreed some of my wolves without intending to. And I had a thought.

It would be very nice to have a warning pop-up to inform the player that the wolves are related. I think it would make sense for this option to be toggle-able so that players who don't care about that sort of thing aren't bothered.

I think this is diffrent enough from the Scrying stone suggestion to merit its own post, as this would be free and linked directly to the breeding page.

I don't know anything about coding but I believe it would be as simple as running a quick scan for matching wolf IDs in the family trees. This would have to include the ID of the wolves actually doing the breeding as well.

I believe this is a small easy change that could make Wolvden a little more user friendly.

Thank you for considering my suggestion!

TBH I was a little surprised that inbreeding was even an option on the game. I'd be a lot happier if the ability to do so was nixed altogether.

VERY LATE EDIT: eh, given time, I don't care enough to agree with myself on this one anymore. Keeping it up for context.  Support.

MEGA SUPPORT!

I’m not sure about nixing it altogether - some wolves would probably have to disappear from the game if so or be completely unbreedable, as they’re already inbred - which would probably make some people upset. some people don’t care about inbreeding or just don’t know that it exists.

however, it would make it so, so much easier for those of us who do care about making sure we don’t inbreed!! i would love love love this suggestion to become a thing. sometimes I can only play on mobile and it can be a pain to check family trees for inbreeding! I would really love it to be a pop up on the breeding page, but a pop up on the family lineage page would be awesome as well!

Nixing it entirely wouldn't get rid of inbred wolves generally, the current generation could die out naturally.

EDIT: Less glib this time. Yeah, I could see people being frustrated if they created their pack entirely around inbreeding without thinking too hard about it, which means that it's something the devs would have to address as that generation 'dies out,' but I'd argue that phasing it out is still a good idea.

some people really love their pixel wolves, and some have probably paid high amounts of gold coins for their wolves, so I don’t think it would be fair to remove a function for their wolf because they don’t care about a mechanic that the game allows.

I’m not trying to start a debate about incest here, I understand what you mean but knocking out a lot of wolves in the game from being able to do... what the game is essentially about would probably make a large group of people upset. a lot of people put a lot of thought into making their packs and choosing their wolves and like said, don’t care about the inbreeding issue because they’re pixel animals and granted, so I don’t think they should suffer for the people who do care about it.

i think that adding in the suggested feature of a pop up on the breeding page + maybe a pop up on the family lineage page would actually help with your phasing out the inbreeding idea, as it might start inclining people to stop inbreeding, especially since the inbred family lineage pop up would let people know before even buying a wolf - which is even more helpful to avoid inbreeding altogether.

sorry if I worded anything badly, I just woke up haha

to put it short, I would really, really like the pop up for those of us who do care about avoiding inbreeding! it would be super helpful to us to avoid inbreeding on accident as well!

I support!!!

I also think it'd be nice if there were an option when searching for wolves that can filter out those that are inbred, the number of wolves I have to click on when finding a suitable match for my own to check to see if they're clean can be very time consuming.

I don't think that inbreeding should be made "illegal" because there's no wrong way to play, but it'd be nice to at least have a filter for it.

Yes...This or a scrying option is ideal. I'm currently using my own coded system to make sure I don't inbreed and it's going to be a mess eventually lol.

I would love to have a notif come up only IF the two wolves have a chance of IB in their immediate lines. I.e parents up to great great grand parents, that is a fair way to avoid some form of IB without removing or overstressibg the system

I agree with you, Bumble. Any lineage outside of what is visible in the family tab is far enough back for it to no longer be much of an issue.
