Info-Gathering: Why do you keep puppies instead of chase them?

So I am strongly in favor of chasing puppies in order to keep the wolf population under control. There is a finite amount of wolves that can be stored/kept alive and obviously the wolf market is suffering. Personally it wouldn't bother me a ton for people not to be able to sell wolves for profit, but that is a part of the game people expect to exist.

Long story short, I think a lot of people agree that there are just too many wolves on the site.

I am not asking that you agree with that sentiment. The purpose of this topic is to help determine why.

Obviously breeding is a huge draw for this game, so I do not blame anyone who wants to breed their wolves a lot. Breeding projects are a thing, and it's just fun to see what you get.

The thing I want to know, and the purpose of this topic is:

If you do not chase puppies you intend to keep (and that you are having a hard time selling or even giving away), why not?

I have some personal theories, but rather than speculate I want to know why you choose not to. This is not a topic for me or anyone else to try to convince you to play in a way you do not want to, so please do not come in if you agree puppies should be chased trying to change their minds.



So I like to breed as often as possible because its fun for me to see the outcomes and I have a few wolves who I think have potential to create a lasting line in my pack. As a result though, I end up with too many pups to keep all of them, especially since I have limited space and resources. Personally I try to limit myself to keeping 1 per litter and only if its a really good one. 

Ultimately I chase any pups that turn out to be total duds/ "potatoes" (very few markings/bases I don't like/just kinda ugly looking) without a problem, but when it comes to pups that I think are cute but just not the best one, I'll try to sell them. I tend to get attached to all the pups I don't chase instantly, so I want to see them go to a "good home" where someone will enjoy them and incorporate them into their own lore or bloodlines. Especially if I think they have potential but I just don't have space. If they don't sell then I'll keep lowering the price until I get tired of feeding them, or they get too close to aging up, then I chase, but I'll be sad about it lmao

The happy moment when someone does buy up the pup and gives it a name is the main thing which encourages me to keep trying to sell instead of just automatically chasing any pup that I'm not gonna keep. It isn't always successful but its cool to see someone take a pup and let it grow up/become part of their pack. I try to keep track of the ones who sold and enjoy checking up on them to see what the new owner decided to do with them. 

I chase dud pups, usually T1, 0-3 marks, less than 250 stats or any combination of those. Any pups that aren't complete fails but aren't quite my taste I set up for trade. Pups that aren't sold and live to adulthood get chased so hopefully they go into the chased pool. I just figure if they don't sell, they have good enough genes to be a nice little NBW.

@badweather Totally understandable! I figured emotional attachment was probably going to be the biggest factor, as well as (possibly) the feeling that it's mean to "chase" a wolf.

Also, as an aside, I know territory may limit your ability to do this. But if you do have any puppies you really wish someone would take but you can't keep and have not been able to sell, you could always allow them to age up to adult and then chase. They won't show up in your lineage anymore but it at least gives that wolf the possibility of being picked up as an NBW someday, rather than the certainty that they're gone forever.

@ {glass} Yeah I intend to do the same thing with my puppies. I do genuinely feel sad chasing them but there's just no way to keep them all.

With the ones you do try to sell, are you putting them up at a price you feel is fair for the puppy, or just putting it up for like 1-5 SC to see if you get anything from it?

I deliberately raise to chase to give myself some sense of realism in the game - most young adult wolves leave their birth packs anyway. While I do put pups up for sale I actually don't expect them to get bought, so anything other than being chased as an adult is a bonus for me.

I have my own little formula I use to try and give them fair prices, but I do always say on their trade listing that I'm willing to let them go for less and the buyout is basically just a suggestion of what I'd LIKE to get for them. I really don't like clogging up the TC with pups and if the formula ever made them worth 1-5SC they would just be chased because they don't have enough good attributes on them to make them breed-worthy IMO. The pups I do sell might not be the most amazing puppies on the market, but I will not put potatoes into the genepool. 

Giving pupsitters something to do is a great reason to keep puppies around for at least a while. While they're still nursing they don't use up food or toys so it's basically free EXP. That said, I've been yeeting a lot of pups immediately because I don't have the patience to click through a million wolves at feeding time lol.

I've tried raising a couple pretty puppies all the way to adulthood for the chase pool, but it just takes so long and uses up so many precious resources :(
